My friend taught me to crochet, my sister taught me knitting basics. I haven't ever delved further into crochet than washcloths, but most of the advanced knitting stuff I taught myself from watching knittinghelp.com videos. I love that website!

Books and various online helps.

I wish it were something I learned as a child at the knee of a grandmother though.

Books. Stitch N Bitch taught me to knit, and one of those "1.2.3 Learn to Crochet" booklets from Michaels taught me to crochet. Lots of trial and error I later learned more advanced knitting techniques from a friend of mine who owned a yarn shop.

My mom showed me how to knit when I was 8 or so, and although I did it for a while then I didn't retain any of it really. When I picked yarn crafts back up, I learned crochet from a book, then a year or two later knitting the same way. I love kids' books especially, since they break everything down so simply and have instant gratification projects in them.

I've learned everything from books, online, or trial and error. (and I just fell in total luuuuurve with www.techknitting.com )

Books. And more books. And a few more books, in the case of knitting. I did have a friend who taught me how to chain, and then I picked up a copy of I Taught Myself to Crochet (which is still readily available & which I highly recommend!) and learned the rest of it.

I bought the companion to ITMtC, I Taught Myself Knitting! at the same time, but couldn't really learn from that. I bought the book again as an adult, and the Klutz book Knitting, and managed to pick it up from there. Stitch & Bitch was somewhat of a help, and KnittingHelp.com as well. I bought Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Knitting because I have owned the crochet version for years & years, but it hasn't been a huge help, mainly because the craft doesn't hold my interest enough for me to get into the advanced stuff.

Ok...totally dumb question here. What is the difference between the two?

Crochet is done with one hook, knitting is done with two needles. There are a lot of other differences, but for a newb, that's the basic.

I used knittinghelp.com.

Books. The I Taught Myself Knitting kit that is sold at Walmart taught me my basics. After a few months I got the book Stitch and Bitch and it taught me even more.

I can't figure out knitting. Crochet I've taught myself watching videos and reading online.

My boyfriends step mom taught me as a teen. I can't imagine trying to learn from a book, she taught me to knit and crochet.

Both of my grandmothers helped to teach me to knit when I was around 5. One tried to teach me to crochet, but I never really could get past granny squares. Whenever I try, I always end up making trapezoids.

I took a class at a local yarn shop 15 years ago, and it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself!

Youtube is where I am learning knitting, supplemented with knittinghelp.com. I had learned crochet from a book, but I didn't much care for it & never stuck with it.

When I was nine my grandma taught me to crochet. She taught me the stitches, and what they were called, but never taught me to read a pattern, so everything I've ever made has been "out of my head" until now. I taught myself to knit from a few books. The usborn kid's knitting book is pretty grand, and I picked up a BUNCH of other books from many places, which have taught me new skills as I've gone along. I have a fun one called Knitty Gritty Knits that I just made my first ear flapped hat out of...but I am slowly building my repretoire out of the various books I have found. Now that I can read a knitting pattern, I think it's pretty pathetic that I can't read a crochet pattern and I've been crocheting for more than two decades, so one day soon, I'm going to sit down and learn to read a crochet pattern as well!...I have a few patterns that my grandma left me when she died that I'd love to try (I'm the only one of her 40 grandchildren who took the time to learn from her!),and a few thrown in with some of the knitting books/pamphlets I've purchased that are DARLING!

I learned to crochet from my sisterin law, and to knit off of knittinghelp.com. I can crochet ok, but can't follow patterns to save my life!

Let me know how you learn, k?
