How did you learn to knit or crochet? - Page 2

I actually paid a lady $50 for private knitting lessons. She was an elderly lady who owned a small yarn shop near me. I had a toddler and preschooler at the time and couldn't join her regular beginner classes so she offered to do private lessons whenever I could make it in. She taught me the basics and I made my first scarf. It was worth the $$. She has since retired and closed the shop. I only wish I could find someone nearby to teach me how to crochet

I taught my self to knit really late one night after ds was born. He had fallen asleep, but the wonky hours we were keeping left me wide awake in the wee hours of the morning. So, I sat down with the computer in front of me, watched cast-on videos again and again until I got it right.

After many false starts, a friend taught me in October. We work together (as teachers) so it was great to bring in a project when I got stuck or made a mistake. She helped me through the harder parts and I've gradually picked up more and more. I like having ready made help because I tend to get frustrated rather easily.

My mom taught me how to crochet when I was pretty young. I think she learned it from her grandmother. I taught myself how to read patterns over the years.

I taught myself how to knit about a year ago from knittinghelp.com.

My mom taught me how to make chain stitches with a crochet hook when I was a kid--that was all I had the patience for at the time. About 5 or 6 years ago, I was stuck in an airport for many hours and three gate changes. I ended up chatting with this woman who was crocheting and she taught me the basic single stitch. When I finally got to my destination, I bought a taught-myself book and started crocheting like a madwoman.

My grandmother taught me to cast on years and years ago. A friend of the family gave me another knitting lesson or two and I knitted a bit in junior high, but haven't really kept it up. If I ever really get the urge again, I have a few websites bookmarked and DH can help me if I get stuck. He's a much better knitter than I.

I learned how to crochet when I was making a waldorf doll two Christmases ago for my daughter! Haha... I had to crochet a cap for the doll's head to attach strands for her hair. It was fun and then I couldn't stop and taught myself how to make mittens, I made twelve pairs that year!

Books mostly. I am just teaching myself to crochet now but I think I will prefer knitting.
I am taking a sock knitting class next month. I am not very a very adventuresome knitting so I am hoping this will help me expand a bit.
