Storytelling

We are really getting into story telling here and I'm curious how you go about it? what sort of ritual do you have do you have a song a candle that you light before you start? do you use any props?

I'm trying to figure out what would work for us as I'm planning for the week ahead. I'm picking up some t-lights lteron and go trough my box of candle holders to find a suitable one to light at the beginning of storytime

Thanks :

We don't have a storytelling ritual at home but I can share what my daughter's class does, which is easy to do at home.

They start by singing the song that indicates that it is story time:

"Mother of the fairytale, take me by your silver hand. Sail me in your silver boat. Sail me silently afloat. Mother of the fairytale, take me to your shining land."

Then the kids sit around the storytelling chair, a candle is lit, a bell is gently rung and when the children are silent, the story starts.

At the end of the story the bell is rung again, the children snuff the candle and gently clap singing:
"Thank you story teller, thank you story teller"

They then have a 10 minute rest where they reflect on the story.

Sorry, just saw your response.

At school they get the same story for a week or two, depending on how complex it is or if there is a special even which warrants a different story.

It usually ends with the last telling of the story being a little puppet show.
