hypothetical (?) thrush question

i'm just asking out of curiosity, because it's a done deal and i can't do anything about it, but here goes.

people i know had a baby back in...hmm, october? and i just recently talked to the dad, on IM, and he said he was feeding the baby. just teasing, i said "so you have milk?" and he said they'd had to stop BFing at 2 weeks because they had thrush.

now i don't know much about thrush, because it wasn't an issue with me or my ds, but i'm pretty sure one does not have to stop nursing because of it. but this is a guy who totally made fun of me still nursing my ds way past "necessary" (he knew i nursed at least till ds was 4) and does not practice AP or natural parenting or any such similarity.

but i'm just curious. if this had been a couple who was committed to BFing, what would/should they have been told re: thrush?

thanks!

They should have been told that nursing does not need to stop on account of thrush. Mom and baby should have both been treated with an antifungal agent, either a topical cream like Nystatin or possibly an oral agent (if the thrush was severe). Mom should have been told to practice very careful hygiene, including washing her bras, clothes, and her baby's clothes in hot water, and boiling pump parts and bottles. Mom should have been told to watch her diet carefully, avoiding thrush-promoting foods like white flour and sugar and taking a good probiotic.

That's a shame. I guess the discomfort for mama was enough to make her say forget it. It is REALLY painful and if you aren't educated and don't want to continue, I can't say I blame her. She must have gotten poor info from her doc or the pediatrician, or just didn't want to bother fighting the infection.

I agree with pp. Topical APNO, diflucan, and GSE tablets are what finally helped me kick thrush (and I had it for almost 2 months). There was no need to stop nursing, though, as painful as it was for me.

yep, i agree. i'm pretty sure they had info/decided themselves that you have to stop nursing if you have it. and/or they didn't want to bother. it *is* sad. i wish they had been stronger or had someone to help them know they could keep going, during it all. it's too late now

at least he (the baby) got the colostrum and two weeks of nursing. i only got 3 weeks myself when i was a baby
