Anyone seen the new Clorox commercial??

The voiceover gives instructions on disinfecting toys with bleach, then instructions on disinfecting baby bottles with bleach. This as the commercial mom washes a bottle in bleach then fills it and hands it to the baby and walks off. :eyeroll

Ugh.

It reminds me of another commercial I saw (sponsored by Clorox). A kid comes home from school and tells mom about the teacher talking about being prepared for natural disasters and about how you need an emergency kit etc. The next shot is mom putting a large bottle of clorox in the emergency kit. Like, yeah, after an earthquake the first thing I'm gonna be worried about is having my bleach.

I saw that and it struck me as a bad idea (the bottle thing).

Actually you can use bleach to purify contaminated water after a disaster, along with boiling it, iodine or water purification tablets.

I don't think that it was intended for emergency stain fighting

we have it in our emergency kit for "purifying" (I guess that's what you would call it) water

The bottle thing is gross. I haven't seen the ad yet.

Yes! It even comes with "instructions" on how long to swish the bottles in the water.

I am 15 weeks pregnant and that commercial definitely made me throw up in my mouth a little when I thought about the little kids getting clorox in their mouths!

Isn't there also a dog in that commercial? I think about my sweet golden retriever and we keep contaminants like that far far away from him!

The point being, there are other ways to purify water then bleach. We prefer to keep a safer alternative in our emergency kit, including clean water.

I saw that! I thought it was weird they didn't even rinse off the bleach. Strange.

I saw that commercial today! Whatever happened to just disinfecting bottles with boiling water? Seriously the bleach in a bottle idea is nauseating to me!

I don't like the idea of bleaching a baby bottle or any item that is used to serve food.

Kind of off topic, but I know people that will add bleach to their bath water. I hope that i am never that dirty.

When it's that diluted, it won't hurt anything. We have used it to clean dog bowls (15 at a time) for years. You just really dilute it. It's harmless. It's just like the Clorox anywhere spray. It's safe around food because it's so diluted.

Actually it is a treatment for ecxema, one recommended by our allergy/asthma specialist and I read about it in the NYT 6 months or so ago. During the summer we just use the pool. It helps kills the bad bugs that can get in the excema and make the sores not heal and therefore get worse. It is only a small amount of bleach and a lot of water. Now with just daily soaks and Vanicream lotion & soap our guy has smooth baby soft skin on his toddler self. But yeah I have never felt that dirty!

A little bleach is a helpful thing to have around but the Clorox people would obviously use a lot more. No thanks!

The swishing in very diluted bleach water is very common in food service. The final step in all commercial dishwashing is a sanitize step, and the commercial solutions used are pretty much diluted bleach. Dishes are not rinsed after this step. I wouldn't bother doing it in my own house, but I don't think it's a big deal, the solution is very diluted.

I worked in a coffee shop and we cleaned out the coffee containers with a bleach/water solution. Ick.

I would never do that. I'm able to exclusively breastfeed. My breasts, on the other hand, get a daily wipe down w/ diluted Clorox.

I kid. :

In order to make chlorine harmless, you would have to dilute it so much that it wouldn't clean anything either.

Oh yes, this commercial totally grossed me out. (isn't there a puking smiley?)

On a side note, I heard you can use gse to make dirty water drinkable. Anybody know if this is true?

!
It's also a treatment for people who are struggling with MRSA. But some studies say vinegar or tea tree oil work just as well.

It's always good to have some bleach in the emergency kit. You never know what it's like to need to disinfect something when you have limited water available.
