Felt soap question

I think I want to do some for christmas this year (yes I'm thinking ahead We have large families!). Do you have to use roving/batts? I want to knit up some soap sacks and do it that way. Seems everywhere I look does it with unspun wool.

I've never personally done it either way but I have seen it done the way you're suggesting. I can't remember where. It looked really nice though. The bag just wasn't as tight fitting as the roving kind, there was more wiggle room for the soap.
Funny you would say that though, I've been thinking that since this last holiday was such a struggle I'm starting now for this year. Wow, we are so on the ball!

Considering how quick wet felting is and that you are a spinner with a fleece that is the bane of your existence, why would you want to do it any other way?????

No snark, I just don't think you're using your head here. Or have you not yet discovered the speedy fun that is wet felting?

hehehe... where on earth is that smilie with the water spitting?

I saw a pattern for knitted ones somewhere- but you could easily make up a pattern yourself... Eh- nevermind- it was for a cotton one....

I thought of it but I'm actuall productive with m spinning now and the fleece is getting processsed now that I have dye and a drum carder.

Plus, this idea pains me period. I fiure knitting will make it seem more enjoyable to me. Because..................

I hate felting.I think it's....ugly.

Did I just admit that?

I have no idea if this is any help or not, but...

I don't know how to knit and I didn't have any roving in the house so I tried making felted soap with wool yarn. It didn't work. The yarn was too thick, even felted, to allow the soap to come through. Total bust. Anyway, it was a recycled Goodwill wool sweater and the unraveled yarn was really thick.

So, I'm thinking that knitting a bag with thinner yarn might work.

FWIW, I felted some soap with roving the other day. I guess it looks ok but washing with it is another story. It's like scrubbing off with a tiny mangled wet sheep. I think I don't like it. Now I'm going to go the crocheted bag route. When I get to it I'll be back with my findings.
