I am passionate about both of them.
Anyone else?

I really like Bernstein, especially Candide, Chichester Psalms, Trouble in Tahiti and his songs. My DD has run around the house singing "Glitter And Be Gay" since she was in diapers.

What Copeland and Bernstein are your faves?

Copeland's ballets probably move me the most...appalachian Spring, Billy The Kid, but I love El Salon de Mexico.
Have you ever heard his cinema work is also sooooo moving. I remember the first time I heard the soundtrack to Our Town I knew instantly it was Copeland. Although, that does not make me a genius.. he is just so identifiable I suppose.

It terms of Bernstein..well first of all I must say that I think his versions of all of Copleland's pieces is the best. The two of them were great friends and Copeland (his senior by many years) took Bernstein under his wing early in LB's career and they really understood each other. So, if you picke up any CDs where Bernstein's conducts Copeland's work..well I think it is the best. A perfect marriage.

Everything else by Bernstein still melts me.
I am embarrassed to say I have not had a CD of Candide in my world. Just this week I ordered one. And I also ordered the Soundtrack to On The Waterfront which is also a Bernstein work that I am not as familiar.

If there is anything more beautiful or perfect than West Side Story... I don't know what it is. And I am not necessarily a Broadway person. But, man, it slays me.

Your daughter sounds darling. My son knows more of the Copeland pieces than LB. And he loves Gershwin's Rapsody in Blue which we call---"honk, honk beep beep" because when he was younger I played it and we pretended the sounds were those of cars and buses and subways.

ah, i'm getting misty just thinking about it all.

I don't know if you have listened to the 11part piece on NPR all about Bernstein but it is awesome. For $45 you can download it on Artistowned.com

I can give you the link. It is the best way to work out at the gym!

Well, by my choices, you can probably tell I'm a singer, so that's the stuff I gravitate toward. I do like Copeland's songs, too. I will have to check out Bernstein conducting Copeland - I'd forgotten he was Bernstein's mentor. My DH's CD/record collection is like a library - I bet he has some.

I know what you mean about being a fan - I'm such an opera/song fangirl. My friend's nanny is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's ex-wife - she met him because her dad taught FD voice lessons. I talked to the ex-Mrs. FD one time, and the one recording I asked her about was Bernstein playing Mahler songs. Do you know that recording? Amazing! I listened to it almost every day when I was in conservatory.

I will check out the NPR series - that sounds so cool. Although I never listen to classical music at the gym - I get too absorbed and don't work out hard enough.

Yes, I just heard the Bernstein Mahler...it was hour 5 of the 11 part series.
I can not speak highly enough of it..btw.. it is Leonard Bernstein: An American Life.... It is not just the music they play they read letters between him and copeland and all kinds of people and there was quite a discussion with the historians et al regarding Mahler.
Mahler is so heavy...It stretches me.. I was reacquainted with Brahms 3rd symphony soooo sublime...

Given you are an opera/singer fan...I will assume you saw Topsy Turvey? I LOVED it.
