Can anyone point me to a free pattern online for a simple hat? I am a true beginner knitter and I am trying to teach myself to crochet as well so either type of pattern would be great. Thanks.

Do you want something that uses knit and purl stitches, or just the knit stitch?
If you want to just practice your knit stitch a lot, I would recommend a roll brim hat. The entire thing is knit stitches (and knit 2 together for the decreases).
Here's a pattern for a roll brim hat...
http://www.needlebeetle.com/free/rollbrim.htm
If you want something that is ribbed and will be more stretchy, this is a link to a hat I have made 3 or 4 times now, and it's super easy and super fast and fun to make.

You can knit it long if you want the person to be able to fold the brim up, or make it shorter if you just want a regular beanie.
You can adjust these patterns pretty easily for different sizes/yarn weights too, which is nice. Of course I'm sure plenty of us online can help with adjusting if you need it.
HTH! I love making hats. They are so much fun!

My best recommendation would be to get on Ravelry if you haven't. It's www.ravelry.com, you will have to request an invitation but it usually only takes a couple of days. Once you are on there, you will have access to more free patterns than you can knit in a lifetime!

In an odd coincidence, I *just* posted a basic crocheted hat on my patterns blog.
It's linked in my signature.

I can purl and knit but I am afraid of circular needles so these patterns are perfect--thanks!

This is the best pattern and I just made one for each of my sons.
I hope you'll love it too. You don't have to knit it in the round if you don't want to.
Enjoy
