baby puking after rice cereal

Ok ... I was here a few months back due to excema... we got that under control - now it only gets red in the cheeks if the weather is cold/heater is on... but the rash in her chest that was weepy and horrible is gone. We use vanicream to keep things under control.

We started introuducing solids after 6 months. The last couple of times that she has taken rice cereal (Earth's Best) she has vomited several times as if she was emptying her stomach. No fevers, or anything else but she gets very whimpy and upset over it (I would too if I puked several times in a row poor baby) - anyway is this an allergy to rice?

We called the ped the first time this happened which was after she had had it for a few times without problems. She said it was unlikely to be an allergy but now after a week or so of no solids we try rice again and we are back to puking.

Your throughts and opinions will be so appreciated!

Blessings!

My DD reacts to rice and I know of others whose babies are intolerant of or allergic to rice, so it can definitely be a reaction to rice. If it were me, I would stop giving her rice and focus on vegetables and fruit for solids.

Well, whether or not it's an allergy I certainly wouldn't be giving your child rice again in the near future. I would hold of on all grains and only offer cooked veggies, fruits and meats.

That was my son's reaction to cow's milk. Clearly cow's milk is more allergenic than rice, but if that's what you're seeing, whatever's really going on, I'd stop giving it. I also vote that meats and veggies and fruits are a very nutritious way to go.

With a history of eczema and puking with just rice cereal, I'd avoid all foods for another few months and focus on your gut healing, so that her gut healing improves, before introducing any foods.

Then I'd only do cooked vegetables, cooked fruits, and cooked meats. Only foods which she could handle independently, not spoon-fed.

This happened to my SIL, and we were at a loss because a rice allerguy seems so unlikely (although not impossible) and then she noticed that her particular brand contained lactose, so her DD was reacting to the dairy in it. I'm not sure about Earth's Best but I'd check to make sure it was a single ingredient product - rice. Hope your little one is doing better!

I know the Gerber rice cereal used to have soy in it. Did you check the ingredients? Even though first foods are supposed to be single ingredient, apparently the baby food companies don't get it and like to add extremely allergenic foods to them. That being said, my DS couldn't have rice (though he just got it back after 7 months without it!).

Ok - so after I posted she was getting more weak and we ended up almost taking her to the children's hospital ER. When we were on our way she started acting more normal so we called the ped and went there instead.
We are thinking it could be FPIES. The reaction started two hours after eating the rice cereal - it is the second time it has happened in the samer manner and she does not have problems when *I* eat rice and then feed her my breastmilk. Anyway... now I am totally freaked about other grains. Not sure if it is smart to feed her those or not. The pediatrician was concerned about iron and suggested polyvisin or another iron for babies from another brand.
Ugh... I tried pears today ... she did not love them but no reaction - yeah. She has also not reacted to sweet potatoes although she does not seem to love them at all and will only take a few tiny spoons of them.

Anyway... obviously we won't give her any more rice cereal. Should we trial som of the other cereals like oat or barley?

Oh, poor babe and poor you guys! I'm glad she's doing better and seems okay with the pears. This site had some good info about cross allergens:

Quote:
People who are allergic to rice also may react to other foods in the same botanical family. This is called cross reactivity, and it requires people with food allergies to be extra careful when making meals or ordering food in restaurants. Foods that can spark reactions in those allergic to rice include:

1. Barley
2. Maize
3. Wheat
4. Durum wheat
5. Corn
6. Soybean
7. Triticale
8. Oats
9. Rye

Those with rice allergy are also frequently allergic to peaches and apples.

My understanding is (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the body doesn't have the proper enzymes to break down grains until age 2.

I know many also suggest avoiding gluten while healing the gut, so those would definitely be out.

Good luck...

Thank you so much for that list and for all the insight! No more cereals for us! I am going to read the Digestive Health book and try to heal my gut and hers. I am going to go REALLY SLOW on the solids. She is totally happy nursing - thank goodness. This whole allergies thing is new to us - my son never had an issue - and really stressful.

One more question - should I avoid everything too? I have read that FPIES does not present through breastmilk but direct contact with the food by the baby. However will it be better - should I avoid?

Yep. If baby/child has to avoid then BF mama has to avoid it.

Ok so rice is out I am taking her to a pediatric allergiest ASAP. I feel like the pediatrician just did not know what she was talking about. I was the one bringing up the FPIES and she agreed although I really think she was not sure what I was talking about
