rice dream rice milk gluten free?

just as i asked? I'm not sure if any of the additives have gluten---it's the rice dream kind---I also bought some almond milk if there isn't any rice milk that is gluten okay.

AND where do you find buckwheat? i looked 3 stores today and found little pouches of Bob's for like $4 each! ouch!! (also since my son hasn't even had buckwheat--is it highly allergenic? or am I pretty safe to say i won't ruin our gluten free trial by using buckwheat?!!)

i am assuming NO--but do the sesame seed cajun sticks in the HF store have gluten? (i assume they do--I just bought some back home and can't check for ingredients)

so far we're doing well.
had a green smoothie for breakfast---
steamed veggies w/spike over Quinoa for lunch and
a spinach salad w/raisins, sunflower seeds, and baked chicken

(meaning i wasn't starving my first day off gluten!!)

Rice Dream has a miniscule amount of gluten- small enough that they can call it gluten free, but enough to bother someone with a severe allergy/intolerance.

I order a big bulk bag of buckwheat groats and grind it myself (in a coffee grinder), because I couldn't stand to pay that much for those tiny bags. And yes, buckwheat is gluten free. But if you've never tried it, start with the little bag... because anything can be allergenic, you just never know.

Congrats on your first day off gluten!

so do you use the rice dream and would it be a true test if I continue me and my son on it?

We use the rice dream and DD2 hasn't had a problem with it (tested positive to gluten on ALCAT test).

What part of the country do you live in? You can get buckwheat from Bob's Red Mill and also from Barry's Farm (or something like that) on line. Amazon.com probably has it. The best kind I found was in upstate NY at Hannaford's grocery store. It's Acadia brand. It's a "light" buckwheat. It's an herb. No relation to wheat. We use it a lot. I could mail it to you but I've already got a reputation...

haha that's funny--you'd think they'd like you to sale more of their stuff.

I am in ID ---- thanks for telling me about the rice milk--i feel bettter now.

-one more question (ha wouldn't that be the day)--but on the buckwheat I bought--it didn't officially hold the gluten free seal on the bottom left corner and i was confused because I was looking at tonz of other bob's flours and they had the gluten free seal--is it a manufacturing belt thing or something?
i never thought to get it directly--that will be a good idea depending on what happens these two weeks off gluten. thanks!

I was just on the Bob's Red Mill site ordering some guar gum (because I can't find it anywhere locally). Look on there and see if the buckwheat flour is listed under their gluten free flours. I thought they were very good about their labeling.

It's not Acadia brand. It's Bouchard Family Farm. But it's from Maine and it says something on the bag about Acadia, so I always get confused. It was the PO that had the issue (the bag broke and some leaked out and they thought I was smuggling drugs or anthrax or something). I don't know if anyone has looked into buying it directly from them. My mother lives in upstate NY so she brings it to me when she visits.

If it's only 2 weeks, it might be best to go off even the rice milk and then add it back in after the 2 weeks to check it, since there is a wee bit of gluten in it, which is enough to set some people off. DD1 was only a "mild" intolerance on gluten, so that may be why she's okay with it. DS can't have rice (or soy or dairy) so he doesn't have any type of milk except coconut which I use for baking.

okay i will take him off rice milk-- is almond milk the same story? what about making my own of either? would that take the problem away?!

Definitely. Using whole food ingredients and making stuff yourself instead of using processed/packaged foods is always a good idea for allergies.

it looks like the bobs red mill buckwheat GROATS are gluten free--but the flour isn't marked in the website either...maybe cross contamination while grinding?

Yeah, most likely. They probably grind all their grains on the same equipment.

ETA: (that's why I grind my own!)

If you live near a Whole Foods, the 365 brand is gluten-free and cheaper than Rice Dream!

Also -- FWIW, we tried buckwheat with Ean and it was a disaster! I know there are mixed opinions about buckwheat, and I'm sure some people do fine with it, but he may as well have been mainlining gluten when we tried it!

thanks---i made the buckwheat pancakes today and Davey LOVED them--he got an exzema patch today--then broke out on face after a salad I gave him---it seems he's reacting to EVERYTHING since Christmas.---maybe I shouldn't give him the buckwheat again--I'll let him have it till the batch is gone in a couple days maybe (expensive flour!)

we don't have ANY health food store---we are lucky to have a fred meyer--that's it!

My DD2 can't do any of the other rice milks because they all have carageenan in them, which she reacts to. Which leaves Rice Dream, and even though it has miniscule gluten in it, she doesn't react to it, so I'm okay with it. Others probably don't do well with it.

Out of the 34 people who responded to the intolerance survey here (mine), 2 couldn't have buckwheat. One of those was a gluten-intolerance person, the other wasn't. Buckwheat is an herb. It's not related to wheat at all. So either it's a separate intolerance or it's a cross contamination issue, if he is reacting to it.

kathy's buckwheat recipe calls for white vinegar--I heard someone say it has wheat---is that just wheat or gluten too? --- - - - --- I wasn't sure it was buckwheat---he just had lots of mess on his face today. AHH! it never ends.

It was me who said white vinegar is wheat, but not all of them are. I avoid them all on the basis that many are so... I refuse to chance it. And, fwiw, my ds seems to be the only one one this board who reacts to white vinegar with a wheat allergy/intolerance. It's pretty simple to just sub rice vinegar (UNFLAVORED) for white vinegar in a recipe. White vinegar is gf since it's refined.
Also, many buckwheat flours are cc'd, yes, so I would be extra vigilant when trying to find one.

Actually it says "white WINE vinegar". Heinz white vinegar is corn which DD2 can't have. Both of them react to apples so apple cider vinegar is out. DS reacts to rice (though he got it back recently, so it's still on rotational basis) so I don't use rice vinegar. I use white wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar (both grape based). You got me scared that I wrote white vinegar which I don't even have in the house anymore so I checked my recipe to make sure and it did say white wine. You can use any vinegar in there but since many of my family go on the website when making things for get-togethers, I'm pretty explicit so that they don't give my kids something they shouldn't have.

I use the Rice Dream b/c I'm not off gluten right now (supposed to be wheat free, but not doing well) and the 1/2 gal is cheap at Wal-Mart (when we actually go there, yuck). We use the Hy-Vee brand and used to the use the 365 brand as well when the kids were gluten free. They did fine w/ Buckwheat as well. I don't remember about the other 'Dream' products, but I'd probably steer clear of the nut milks at least for now.

shows you how much I know---I did use white WINE vinegar in the waffles--i thought that was white wine vinegar--you mean white distilled vinegar when refering to white vinegar can have gluten then? sorry to confuse you.

my problem is that we don't have a health food store--so i got what I got at Fred Meyer---if i continue to use the (maybe bob's CC buckwheat flour and rice dream rice milk)---do you think I would still see an improvement and if i do--then i could go gungho? we don't have money right now to buy all this stuff online-- UNLESS we see a BIG improvement off gluten--then we can plan for it and get going with that.
