Question about Merino Recycled Sweaters for Cover

I made several wool covers out of a thick grey 100% wool sweater. They seem too wick moisture, baby is not here yet to try out, so I just mean if I put water on them it pools up. Good I think? But I made a few covers yesterday from a 100% Merino wool sweater, which I first washed on hot and dried twice, it shrunk some but didn't felt really. But after lanolizing it doesn't seem very water resistant. Should I have made them two layers? Or maybe I need to re-lanolize? I lanolized them inside out, could that be the problem? Well TIA. Any advice would be appreciated!

Merino does work as a cover, it's just more of a lightweight, day time cover. You could also doubler layer it, I've seen that recommended too. DS is wearing a pair of his merino wool longies right now, I do like them for daytime use.
