I'm making... or about to try to make... baked beans. I made them once before and DH (whose whole family is from Boston- he moved when he was 7) said they were good but... I thought they were dry even though I kept adding more liquid. Any tips on how to keep them "saucy"?

Also, in the future, I will cook the beans 1/2 hour longer (1 1/2 hours total) *before* I put them in the crockpot with the saucy stuff- I think that will take care of the dryness issue I'm having and decrease my crockpot time (which is about 4 hours).
