Desperate for Shampoo

Thread Starter
OK I've been using shampoo bars for the last year. Not always the best for my hair. Only every once in a while will my hair actually look and feel great. My hair was so uck tonight that in desperation I grabbed my old bottle of Pantene. BIG mistake! The smell is killing me. My scalp is almost burning. My hair immediately felt like straw.
Help!
Our water is hard to very hard.
I have thick wavy hair, just below my shoulders.

BS and such don't work. Tried that for a while. I think I need to go back to bottled shampoo, if only for my sanity.
I can't afford the really expensive stuff.

Any recommendations? Please.........

Have you ever tried dish soap? When baking soda won't do the job by itself, I use a very small amount of dish soap (only on the "head" area - I have long hair with sometimes oily roots). Don't expect it to lather up like shampoo, but it will really help if your hair tend to be oily.

Be SURE to finish wil a dilute vinegar (or lemon juice) rinse. One part vinegar to seven to 12 parts water, and then leave it in.

I've been happy with this kind of Kiss my Face organic Shampoo. I have tried a number of other natural/organic kinds but this is my favorite. I'll never use mainstream brands again. Like you, the smell of stuff like pantene or tressame makes me ill and stings my scalp (maybe before I was just used to it?)

I buy it at Albertson's or Target. It's $7 something, I believe but worth it and lasts us (3 users) a good two weeks.

ETA: no parabens or SLS

I like the JASON line. I can't bring myself to buy conventional shampoo, and they only run $6 or $7 a bottle.

Hi! I've been using this for about 4 months now and absolutely love it:

You still have to do the vinegar rinse, but they provide you with an extra bottle with measurements on it so it's really easy to do. I just keep a small bottle of vinegar in the shower and a gallon under the sink to refill when needed.

Don't go back to conventional shampoo unless you absolutely have to!

I have found that homemade soap is *so* much better for my hair then shampoo bars.

I really love Desert Essence Shampoo and Conditioner. They are paraben free. I have the apple ginger scent and it smells great, also detangles my curly hair really well. I have super tangly hair

I stick to bottle shampoo... I recently got Burts Bees More Moisture Raspberry and Brazil Nut Shampoo and Conditioner and have been very pleased. I have thick straight longish hair but it is very fine and knots easily - I wish the conditioner worked a bit better detangling but not enough to keep me from using the product. These are paraben and SLS free.

I also like Oyin Handmade's Honey Hemp Conditioner - A LOT!!!!

I was using Natures Gate Hemp Shampoo and Conditioner but I only just learned about SLS and while NG has no parabens it does have SLS and I'm now a little skeptical. That said, I reallllllly like/d it!

I hope that helps. I'm really not into the no-pooing and shampoo bars aren't enough for me (right now) so I'm also interested in hearing what other "regular" liquid shampoos and conditioners others have had luck with.

Sally Beauty carries a hard water shampoo and matching conditioner made by Ion. It keeps the calcium and other minerals from frying your hair.

I live with extremely hard water from a well and it saved my hair. I'm trying no-poo now but might have to go back.

what was wrong with the shampoo bar? did it dry out your hair or not get it clean?

does it contain alot of coconut oil? coconut oil is drying of the skin i cannot imagine its not drying for the hair too.

I second this...especially if you have dandruff issues. However any of Aubrey's shampoos rock (JAY is one of the pricier ones). I like the Blue Chamomile Shampoo the best.

I've started using Silken Family Shampoo by Neways recently and it works well for my natural, ethnic hair which typically doesn't respond to most shampoos well. You can get an 8-ounce bottle at wholesale (through a distributor) for $8.20, not bad, and it only takes a little for it to work. No icky ingredients...
