Rice Dream ice cream

Well, I just got off the phone with Hain Celestial group, who make (correction, MADE) the one kind of fricking ice cream my kid could eat. I am heartbroken. They have discontinued making it. I entered my plea that they consider reversing their decision, as the "organic" formula they replaced it with contains carageenan...which many of us have to avoid. Anyone who wants to chime in in asking for them to resume production of the original formula vanilla Rice Dream Frozen dessert please feel free to call

1-800-434-4246

SKU# is 0 84253 77771 1

He's been asking for ice cream so much lately, and I thought they were just having trouble getting it in. I had even called at one point and asked Hain...they said they had not stopped making it. I feel so frustrated.

He saw the container sitting here while I typed the SKU, and so I just gave him a tablespoon in a dish. It made me break into tears. A kid should be able to have ice cream.

P.S. - he can't have coconut, so please, no suggestions about that brand I have heard is so good that they make with coconut.

Have you looked into the so delicious brand or the coconut icecream?
that is frustrating.
My oldest can have the coconut, my youngest only the rice dream.

I have found my youngest really loves "fake" ice cream, which is avocado, frozen banana, sweetener, vanilla (and I add berries to keep it from looking a yucky green). I bet it would be really tasty with chocolate. We can't have chocolate here so I haven't tried it.
I think this fake one is sooooo much better tasting than the rice ice cream.

Good luck. Yes it is so annoying and unfair.

total bummer. i know it's SO not the same as going to the store to buy ice cream but i bet you can find a safe recipe to make homemade ice cream. i know....a kid should be able to have ice cream. big hugs.

I know. My DD2 reacts to the carageenan as well. Sorbet? Can you do guar gum? If so, maybe you can make your own with regular rice dream rice milk in an ice cream maker...

We have made chocolate 'pudding' w/ avacados, I wonder what would happen if it was frozen? I don't know what you're avoiding though. I have a recipe for ice cream using Dari-Free. I'd have to see if it has carageenan in it.

The Rice Dream ice cream has had carageenan in it for a while though (a couple years at least). I didn't know it ever was carageenan free.

Hey, have you done this? Because that is my next move. If you have ideas or a recipe I'd be grateful.

And you know, you're right about the carageenan. It IS listed on the old kind's label. Thing is he didn't react to the old one, but does to the new one, so it's either that there is more carageenan in this formulation or there is an "x" factor I haven't isolated yet. All I know for sure is it wasn't tolerated well.

Thank you for the idea, but he can't have avocado or banana, so that's not going to be an option.

I have not tried to do rice milk ice cream (only because we can do coconut milk and it's fattier, so I opted for that for my experiments). I would say do the coconut ice cream recipe and just substitute rice milk. Can you do eggs? Because that's one thing that makes ice cream what it is. The thickener I use is tapioca starch. If you can do a gum (guar gum or xantham gum) it would be creamier too. It would be rice milk + sweetener. heat. Add tapioca starch (with some more rice milk to make a slurry). Heat for another 5 minutes until it thickens. Cool. Freeze in ice cream freezer. At least that would be the first part of my experiment. I'm trying to think what could make it fattier though for the creaminess.... can you add a little of some kind of oil?

Rice Dream has long been one of the worst companies for food allergic kids. Their rice milk contains gluten; their frozen products are processed in the same facility (and I think on the same lines) as dairy and nuts/peanuts.

Carageenan is in a lot of rice milk products, and ds2 has never had a problem with it--but he has always reacted to Rice Dream products because of all the other issues.

We have made, although not recently, a chocolate sorbet with rice milk and Hershey's cocoa and raw sugar. The rice milk doesn't freeze to a creamy texture (and bananas and avocados are out for us, but it was really interesting to read that avocados can be used to make pudding.), but he was pretty happy with the sorbet.

Let's look at this from a more positive angle- instead of lising all the things your child can't have, list the things he CAN have!

If there's no such thing as a ready-made ice cream that he can have, then I'm sure you can find a recipe that would be safe for him. It might be well worth it to invest in an ice cream maker (it's possible to make ice cream without one, but it's more work and the results aren't as consistent.)

We made a gelato recipe with rice milk. It turned out too sweet but that's easily fixed. The texture was different, though.

Do look into an ice cream maker. You'd be surprised the latitude it gives you in ingredients. I have a milk allergic DH so it's been fun for us to experiment with.

Is rice milk the only "milk" you have to work with? What about potato milk? I know it's hard to find and don't know what it tastes like, but it's a thought.
I remember feeling the same way about pizza before I came across Amy's gfcf pizza's- I was horrible with making decent gfcfef pizza crust.

As you might know, I'm into fast and easy. Well, the other day my oldest dd saw the ice cream salt in the cupboard and wanted to try to make ice cream again like we had done when we had raw goat's milk in the house. I told her we couldn't because all we had was rice milk. I thought it wouldn't turn into ice cream textured ice cream if there was no fat. Then I thought we might as well try it - she was going for the process of it all. So we put rice milk in a baggie w/a little sugar, put that baggie into a bigger freezer bag with ice and the ice cream salt and shook it. It came out just like physical ice cream consistency, but much thinner taste of course as no fat content. But you could probably add stuff for fat and flavor. It was quick and easy and fun for her to shake it around.

I just recently re-acquired an ice cream maker after having gotten rid of the brand new one that was a wedding gift. I still haven't used it, because it calls for me to boil stuff then cool stuff then put it in the maker. When we want ice cream (or some substitute thereof) we want it now! Not 4 hours later!

When I couldn't do milk, I loved that rice dream ice cream. It's yummy.

There are two ways to make ice cream - one is a custard way, that's boiled. One not boiled. Just google other recipes to find a non-boiled one.

For the little one who wants ice cream - how about coconut substitutes? I really like coconut + pineapple + ice, with strawberries in season. It's not ice cream, but it's really good!

We would make the batter the day before and put it in the fridge. That way the next day it was ready in less than 20 minutes.

And you all are killing us non-coconuters (OP included) with all the coconut suggestions. Cut it out!

Oops~! Didn't comprehend that coconut was off limits!

I've made some really nice fruity ices with fruit and sugar, froze them, and then put them in the blender to make them a nice texture. Something like strawberry + lemon juice + sugar + water into the blender, then into an ice cube tray to freeze.

Sad...it is an egg yolk recipe.

But, here's a sorbet recipe from the Cuisinart book:

Puree 5 c blueberries with 1/4 plus 2T lime juice
Push through strainer
Chill 8 hours
Combine in ice cream maker with 1 1/4 c simple syrup

Here's a "Minted Mango Sherbet" that might yield to substitutions:

1 c sugar
3 c whole milk
1/4c light corn syrup
3 ripe mangoes, peeled, seeded and chopped
2 T fresh lime or lemon juice
2 t chopped mint

In medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, and corn syrup. Heat over medium heat, stirring often, until very hot but not boiling. Remove from heat; set aside.

Place mangoes and lime juice in food processor work bowl; process until smooth. Add mango mixture and mint to mil mixture. Cover and chill 8 hours.

Process batter in ice cream maker.
