I have a FL and I have to say it is a PAIN to wash diapers- I know there are a bunch of posts in the diapering forum about that. You will get some good answers over there for diapers. It can be harder to get them clean because it uses so little water and you may need to run more rinses to get all the suds out. That is the only thing I don't like about it.

For regular laundry, I like it a lot! Make sure you get a detergent that can be used in a FL. Maytag may recommend a certain brand that works best with their washer. Also, I leave the door open when I don't have anything in there so it can dry out. If I don't do that it can smell kind of funky in there.

Leave the door and the dispenser drawer slightly open when not in use. It should prevent any mold issue from occuring.

exactly what I was going to recommend.

Otherwise, I agree it can be a PITA for diapers but I've found my routine. Just remember not to use too much soap.

I think if you search the diapering forum, you will find more specifics regarding washing with a front loader.

: Yep. Leave the door open when you are not actually washing. Many folks say they get mold or funny smells in their front loaders. I have always kept that door open, and have never had the slightest smell or sign of mold.

For diapers & really dirty loads, let the washer fill up with water, then turn it off and pour in about 3 gallons of water, either through the soap dispenser (runs directly into the drum in my machine) or by opening the door & pouring it in. This will increase the water level, but it still won't go to the door, so no worries about that. This extra water REALLY helps.

Pre-dissolve anything powdered in water before adding. Things like oxiclean, powdered detergent, etc etc. Just pour it in a cup, add water, mix then pour into the machine.

You can soak in a FL! Just load up the machine, let the machine fill up, add in whatever soaking cleaners (soap, oxiclean, bleach, baking soda, etc), and then turn it off! Add in the extra 3 gallons from above, and that's it. Soak for as long as you usually would. It does help to turn on the machine every now & then to give items a tumble so that each item spends an equal amount of time on top & on the bottom.

Leave the door open when not in use. Otherwise there's ton's of funkiness.

Use about a tbs or 2 of detergent. Less if using a regular detergent. More if cleaning diapers. Since figuring this out, I've gone over a year using the same bottle of detergent I bought from costco!

My front loader has a soak setting if something needs the extra cleaning (like diapers). I have a pre-soak (which agitates periodically), a pre-wash (with it's own soap dispenser), an extra rinse and an extended spin. I'm not doing diapers yet, but family cloth, pads, and even greasy kitchen messes (kitchen cloth) comes out after all that. It also has an independent rinse/spin setting if something is still soapy after all that.

For detergent for clothes, I've been experimenting with BS. Right now I'm using a Tbs each of BS and Borax in the detergent compartment, white vinegar in the softener compartment and liquid oxygen bleach in the bleach compartment. I've never had a problem using powdered detergent in my machine, but you definitely need less of it than a top loader.

I'm going to have to try leaving the door open, I definitely have a musty smell going on inside.

Thanks for the tips!

So far I'm really liking how *clean* my clothes are getting with it!

I feel like I might have to wipe out the detergent dispenser to dry it though, leaving it slightly open even overnight in the winter, it still has water droplets in it. And I've learned that keeping a cloth on top of the machine is good to wipe the left over suds off the door seal...

Leaving the door open makes sense, I always left my TL's door open to prevent 'funk'.

I plan on doing a diaper load today or tomorrow. I do have a rinse/spin cycle prewash and extra rinse as well as a 'sanitary' option. I'll have to play with it but honestly the only thing I'm worried about diaperwise is getting them into the machine (my diapered DD is 2 ). All washes seem to get the clothes wet enough, so we'll see...

for diapers, I do a cold cycle with no soap first to pre-rinse any yuckies.

Then I add soap and hit the sanitary button along with the extra risne. On my FL, this is the longets, hottest setting and I feel it gets the diapers cleanest.

sometimes I'll do an additional cycle or even just a hot wash w/o soap to rinse again... maybe once every ten washes because I am paranoid of getting build-up.

Can I hijack for just a moment?
Is it normal for when a FL fills that it fills a little then swoosh swoosh swoosh the clothes, fills a little more, swoosh, fills a little more then eventually starts washing. I'm used to the TL where it just fills all the way and starts. The FL at the laundrymat I've used before just fills up then starts washing.

FWIW Mine is a LG, not one of the high end ones, but one from Home Depot. I've had mine since right before Christmas and so far I like it.

It's checking to see if it needs to add more water so that there is "just" the right amount. Supposed to save even more water. My machine does that too, but I end up having to add water for the clothes to get clean of detergent, no matter how little detergent I use.

Leave the door open.

Use a very small amount of soap. Can't stress this enough. I use 2T of HE soap for a full load.

I wash diapers regularly and have had no problems. I run them on a cold wash to rinse the nasty bits and then do a hot water wash with soap to get them clean.

Enjoy!
