Too much sea salt?

I just realized that I am eating a ton of sea salt on my TED/ED. It's the only seasoning I can use so I use it a lot to add some flavor. I'm not up on what the current thinking is as to whether this is good or bad. Should I try to cut back? What are the downsides of sea salt?

Good question. I also eat a TON of sea salt these days.
I eat to taste, and I know it's a ton.

For me, my adrenals are weak, and one of the chemicals involved in adrenal fatigue is involved in how your body holds onto sodium. Many people with adrenal fatigue need extra sodium because their bodies don't hold onto enough, they excrete it too easily.

But regardless of whether that's specifically the issue, the better I've eaten (cutting out allergens, processed foods, like that) the more _real_ food cravings I've had, and I think that's me finally able to hear what my body wants and needs. Just took three decades to get here.

Wt... How old are you?! No offense intended at all, I just thought you were around my age or so- late 20's, early 30's. Am I like WAY off?!

Sorry for the OT post but I kind of went what?!
I was basically going to say what Tanya said anyway, that the stress of food allergies may be putting more of a toll on your adrenals so the extra salt *may* be needed.

haha! No, I meant it's been all my life, I'm 33 now. I don't think I've _ever_ had real food cravings cause I've always eaten too many things that were so problematic that my sense of what my body wants/needs has been warped probably since I was 4 months old and my mom started me on formula.

Sorry bout that!

I use a lot of sea salt in my cooking, and I personally make a dilute salt/juice/water beverage that I drink 2-3 liters of daily. Until I starting drinking the salt I had a lot of symptoms of feeling and appearing dehydrated and my endo wanted to test me for diabetes insipidus (which is a disease in which the hormone that regulates the salt/thirst balance is out of whack). I think instead I had some amount of adrenal issues that were caused by my undiagnosed food intolerances.

After I read this book
http://www.celticseasalt.com/Salt_Yo..._P1717C369.cfm
I decided I was doing the right thing. In fact, the amount of salt that he recommends on a daily basis what about what I had been consuming as the amount that made me feel better.

how's your blood pressure? Mine has always been on the low side, so I've never worried about my salt intake. Also, since I don't eat much processed food, I figure I'm still below average what most people get. And you get good trace minerals from sea salt, don't you? Personally, I don't worry about it for me. And my SIL is appalled at the amount of salt I use, but she eats a whole lot of crap so I'm not really worried.

Apparently salt cravings are a sign of adrenal fatigue. Not to depress you all.

Do any of you all have excess stress in your lives?

My blood pressure is low (at least it has been since I left a really stressful job a few years ago). Good point about the processed foods. I bet I still eat less than most of the population!

That's a really good point. My mom was appalled when she was here recently about how much salt I use.... but yeah, no packaged foods here, so that really is my only source of sodium.

STRESS?? Not a chance.

I don't have any stress either (and naturopath already diagnosed me with adrenal fatigue in May, and I still haven't done anything about it). Pass the sea salt!

Low blood pressure can also be a sign of adrenal fatigue, fwiw, and adrenal fatigue is often caused by allergies.
Just an fyi.

If it's unprocessed sea salt with all of the nutrients intact I wouldn't worry about it because of all the above mentioned reasons. I have adrenal issues as well and my husband has barred me from salting his food because I am so heavy with it.

There's a great thread (it's huge though) in H&H called THE Adrenal Fatigue thread. Good links.

ETA: It's one of the threads I became familiar with Tanya through.

It's a little disturbing how many of these things overlap. The only redeeming thing, some days, is the people I've "met" through this.

Disturbing but it also makes sense if you look at the body as a whole, no? I mean, if I push on your shoulder, it makes your feet move eventually, right?
I completely agree that some days the only redeeming part of this journey (besides learning more about how we "work") is the people. I'm so incredibly grateful I stumbled onto MDC.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I've had my eye on that Adrenal Fatigue thread for months now but, like the CSS thread, I'm overwhelmed by it's length. I need to quit my job so I can spend more time on MDC.

Aw shiz. I am eating salt like it's my job over here - my only seasoning I have besides saffron. I also have low BP (used to have borderline-high, but possibly white-coat hypertension; I didn't have high BP for the first time in my life when pregnant with A b/c I used HB MWs and I was much more at ease with the whole thing).

I have considered the adrenal fatigue angle, too. I just need to get to an NP here. With all my extra millions I have laying in giant piles around the house, of course. *sigh*
