some contrax stronger than others = Active Labor or not?

Is it typical that some contractions are much stronger than others? I'd say my contrax are about four minutes apart, but some I can talk through. Every other or every few, though, Oy! verges on a panic-attack triggering pain level. Am I not in active labor until EVERY contraction is that intense?

Hmmm well, IIRC when I was in labor there were times where I thought "that wasn't such a bad one"...but in the end they really did seem to continuously get stronger and stay that way.

I'm wondering this too. I've been having irregular contractions all day, definitely more intense than BH, and feeling closer to my cervix, but mild enough that they're not too much of a distraction. I called my MW a few minutes ago and she said if they start to feel more intense, or if my water breaks or I have bloody show, to call her. I feel bad calling in the middle of the night unless it's the real thing!

Well, about as soon as I posted this, they did become all intense. Baby girl, Mary "Elizabeth" was born at 2:24 this morning. 9 lbs 2 oz and 20.5 inches. I went in to labor on my own, which was my goal, but we had some problems and had a repeat C-section.
