Let's say you got a brand new clothes line for Christmas...

...and you wanted to know where to put it in the backyard...

My fenced backyard is fairly large, rectangular horizontally to the house, with a wooden deck and a rear-entry garage. Not one tree in the fenced part.

Would you:
1. Put it just off the deck so you're literally feet from the washing machine/laundry room
2. Put it right off the rear drive/in the fenced part so you never have to step in the grass (it rains enough here that the backyard gets rather soggy)
3. Put it right in the middle of the yard so your clothes are pretty much always in direct sunlight (although locations 1 and 2 are uber sunny, too)
4. Another spot

Just looking for BTDT/"wish I could change it" advice.

Yes, I'm an over thinker.

Personally, I'd be more concerned about mud than I would about distance to carry, so long as it wasn't more than 20 yds difference or so.

So long as it gets a good amount of sun and/or wind.

Another thing to keep in mind, my grandparents had 2 areas designated for laundry. When the grass would stop growing in one area, grandpa would move the line to the other area so he could rehabilitate the grass. So they switched between the two spots every... 4 years or so.

Do you have or plan on putting any play equipment in the yard, a swing or a slide? I would keep it away from those areas.

Also is there any reason you might drive through the area near the drive and would the poles block your ability to get a vehicle through?

I probably wouldn't put it right in the middle of the yard, I look at the middle part as being a big place to run, play for the kids and it might get in the way for a game of ball or something.

being close to the laundry room is a plus and also being where you are not slogging through grass is another positive.

Having an area sorta in the shade is nice if you worry about sun fade for your dark colored clothes, having it in the sun does wonders for your whites.

I think I would opt for number one, just off the deck. Convenience outranks all the other considerations in my opinion.

Mine is off my back porch, it's too easy for me to consider not using it. Even if I'm feeling sick I can still get myself to my back porch, where as if it was a trek I might talk myself out of it.
