s/o tax refunds - Page 2

We owe again this year (as usual). Whatever is left in our "tax fund" account after paying the IRS will be an extra payment to the mortgage and a little bit of money (maybe $250) toward our usual summer vacation (baseball and zoo trip).

I'm with the person who said they don't like getting a tax refund. I try to adjust our withholding each year (sometimes a few times during the year) so that we either come out even or I pay in a few hundred dollars. I HATE giving the government an interest-free loan, and I have the willpower to maintain other savings plans.

I do have a friend who couldn't save money if her life depended on it - the only way she can save for major purchases is through her tax withholding. But I do think that most folks are much better off trying to break even instead of getting a refund.

We've currently got things set in such a way that we tend to get an astronomically high tax refund.

It happens to be almost exactly what we have to pay in astronomically high property taxes just a couple of months later, so we get the check and then basically send it off to the tax office.

I dont know yet. We get a huge return every year. However, within a month of getting it back, we ALWAYS have a major expense. (ex, last year, my car died AND our sewer line with no insurance on got crushed- there went $7,200 in a week! I was very happy we had that tax return) The year before, it was a few thousand in medical bills. We over pay in taxes, b/c we know that we will be getting slammed with an expense we weren't prepared for or expecting. I wonder what will happen this year... DH wants to change our exemptions to get more money each pay check, but I KNOW he wont save the "extra" for unforseen events.

Well, if I'm lucky enough to actually get a return instead of owing, that money will go towards keeping my family alive and fed...not very fun.

Remodel of the house, new stove so my burners don't turn to HI by themselves anymore and cc debt.

My ex is getting it to use to paying his year rent since he is a SAHD.

We had a lot of changes in income and jobs and school, etc, this year so I have no clue how much we'll get back. I'm pretty confident we won't owe at least. So whatever we get will go toward paying down debt. If we get a really good amount, we might buy a new refrigerator since ours seems to be on its last legs.

NOt sure how much we should be seeing. We filed seperately before. If you're married and have a kids together, can you file seperately?

Our refund is very small since we adjusted our withholdings. Whatever we get will go to savings.

We are anticipating a small refund because we adjusted our withholdings this year. Whatever we get will got to paying off a credit card.

I'm happy - thrilled actually - to find out AFTER the close to $2k in Self Employment taxes are taken out, I'll have $3500 on Jan 30 (EITC). The IRS already has the payment disbursement dates up and it made me sigh in relief that we'll be able to move!!! I was even MORE thrilled when I called the IRS and found out I have no penalties for not prepaying my estimated taxes because I'm getting a refund : (I wasn't keeping track over the year and didn't think I'd need to)

build the rest of our babystep #1 (if it's not done already)-put toward some short term debt, and a short two day stay in orlando (SeaWorld)

Originally, ours was going to build a porch on our home and get bunkbeds for our boys. The rest would be saved. DH found out yesterday he will be losing his job soon So it will all go into savings indefinitely. If need be, it will be all we have to live on for awhile (along with unemployment).

tax return time falls just before property tax and home insurance times. hopefully we get enough back to cover those, otherwise we're in trouble. (every year i start out setting aside enough each month to cover those expenses, and every year the savings end up being used as an emergency fund. it stinks.)

I would like a link to the calculator please.

I have an entire list of things for it to go to. Starting with paying off DS's braces. Paying a $238 speeding ticket DH got. An entire list really that I don't have the time to type out right now, lol. I admit that two things on the list are complete fluff but aren't that much.

I thought we still had to wait to file taxes until the second week of Feb?

I have no idea if we will get anything back, but I'm assuming we'll get at least a few hundred. it will all go to pay off debt, and hopefully this is the year we get it ALL paid off

This is my first year being filing as a dependent with a child. Woo! I feel like such an adult

About half ($1500) is going to savings. The rest will be spent on an eye exam and contacts for me, a trip to Disney World for ds (dp will pay half, I'll pay half... ds will be THRILLED when we finally get it planned and tell him!!!!) and the rest goes towards my car loan.

I am hoping it will wipe out all our cc and school debt. Maybe if it almost wipes it all out, I might save a little back for a trip to Florida. We both have an itch to relax and go somewhere sunny.
