Vaccines and Eczema

Thread Starter
My DD, the offspring of two vaccinated people (DH was probably one of the "grab and stabs" knowing his mom), has had super sensitive skin from day 1. We vaccinated her on the evil AAP schedule until 6 months, skipped her 12 months (MMR & Varivax), and only gave her DTaP and Prevnar at 15 months.

Her eczema has progressively gotten worse over her short lifetime. After the two vaccinations at 15 months, she developed a golf ball size knot in her leg for a month and a large eczema patch at the injection site. This was when we decided to no longer vaccinate.

My question is, has anyone else experienced eczema in vaccinated children? I'm leaning to think there is a direct correlation between the vaccinations and eczema. If so, would I qualify for a vaccine injury case? Who would I contact?

Thanks for your help.

I wasn't allowed to get the smallpox vaccine when I had a small eczema outbreak because it will make the outbreak worse. The Army waited until the outbreak had cleared up before they gave it to me.

I don't think any of the vaccines themelves can cause eczema just make it worse in somebody who already has it.

The CDC actually states that anyone who has ever been diagnosed with eczema should not ever be given the smallpox vaccine and/or come into close contact with someone who has recently had it. It has potentially fatal consequences. (I am also really leary about the chicken pox as what I have read indicates that they are somewhat related.)

I can't find the specific page right now but this one has a bit of info...

I have not heard of the vaccines themselves causing eczema but that doesn't mean they couldn't. I would definantly have the reaction reported to VAERS regardless.

I suffer from bad eczema -- and blame the MMR shot I got as a kid (1979 or so). I only had a handful of shots total overall, but I think those shots messed with my autoimmunity!

This is another reason I feel confident waiting to vax my son!

Most likely I would probably not have taken the risk had I not been deploying to Iraq at the time... smallpox being used as a weapon was a huge concern in 2003.

I agree with the poster who said submit the eczema to VAERS. The only way to really know if there is a correlation between the two is for everybody to submit their adverse reactions.

Anecdotal I know, but i have heard, read, talked to numerous people whose children have eczema and have been fully or partially vaxed. With that beng said I don't think its the only cause/link, but I certainly don't think it heps. It may aggrevate un anderlying condition and make it worse or bring a predisposition to the surface. Again just speculation, but it is certainly not unheard of.

Hmmm.. I don't know. I don't think you could prove it is the vax. there is certainly a school of thought that vaxes can cause it, however heredity has a lot to do with it too. My oldest is fully vaxed and has very mild eczema while his unvaxed brother has it severely. had I vaxed him too maybe I would have wondered if it had been the cause but actually it was just genetic.

I don't know if it causes it or not. As for us, my partially vaxed son (identical schedule to what you posted) has mild eczema. He is 3. My un-vaxed daughter (age 8 months) has smooth clear skin ...no eczema.

Not sure. My partially vax'd 2 year old has had it very very mildly (only on legs) since birth and my unvax'd 8 month old has it on her torso and legs, also pretty mild. Fully vax'd 4 year old has none.

Since eczema can come on because of allergic reactions I would say that vaxes could cause an outbreak since she could have an allergic reaction to something in the vaccines. None of my children have been vaxed and I have several with eczema. My oldest had it severely till we discovered her allergy to milk. It was on her legs and belly and arms. I mean everywhere. It was really really bad. You might want to investigate if your dd has an allergy to any of the components in the vaccines. Gelatin, eggs, an antibiotic, yeast.
