out of hospital birthers...newborn hearing screenings

Good greif has anyone else had fun with trying to get this done? I called the same place that did my son's and after sitting through 15 minutes of interogations and me explaining, gasp WHY I wanted the test performed, they informed me they do not have the equipment. LOL

5 calls later I found some place to do it. My husband told me I should have explained that we're in a recession and I'm trying to make sure I spread the wealth locally for local companies to keep jobs. OY!

We didn't do it at all.
Never really thought about it.

I didn't have a problem at all with my first, the birth center gave me a handout with the name of a clinic that did them, scheduled it, no biggie.

My second I had a friend who is a speech therapist/audiologist just come over and do it. I haven't talked to her in ages though, I'm glad you posted this so I can figure out what I need to do this time if this baby ever decides to come.

I haven't actually ever done the new born screening when my kids were newborns. Usually when they are about 1.5 and not talking at all. I should probably do it this time. I just call the university hosp. here and they have a childrens hearing clinic.

We weren't planning on doing it, but we had a hospital transfer after the birth (for me, not for the babe). Baby came with me of course, so I just let them do the screening while we were there since we stayed overnight. I didn't explain that she wasn't born at the hospital though...by that point I was tired of explaining.

Maybe you could get a recc from the pediatrician? :headscratch:

Not in your DDC Our family doctor gave us a slip. We actually never went though. We did it with DD 2x because she failed the first time, and it was just unnecessary, we felt.

I just got back from trying to get my baby's hearing tested, but it seems he still has some fluid behind one ear, so they didn't go any further than that. We'll try again in a couple weeks.

My MW gave me a pamphlet on it and said it was up to us if we wanted it done (we already knew that, but she still gave us the standard info). All I had to do was have our family dr call in a referral for a hearing test at the Children's Hospital where I live. I would think that any pediatrician/family dr's office would know how to get it done or call an audiologist's office.

It's actually a really important screening completely non-invasive and the best way to help prevent long term disability. I have 3 cousins who are deaf and the first one wasn't diagnosed until he was 5 anc it took a long time for him to learn to speak correctly.

We had it done for our last baby that was born at home, but this time we aren't even doing it. If we think there is a problem then we'll get it done, but as of now he turns his head when I am talking and walk into a room, so I'm not worried about it.

Didn't do it w/DD, not planning to with little Guy (still nameless)...and boy were we ever harassed by the state for not doing it, they called every month and sent letters and finally, afraid we were facing Child Protective Services issues, we called our dr to call them off! I know it can be really important but we don't have any deafness in family and I think we will know if there's a problem early on.

just so everyone knows more then 50% of deaf children do not have deaf parents or close siblings who are deaf. Also mild to moderate hearing loss is very hard to detect by parents, and learning can be impaired if not corrected very early on.

I second the above on the importance. My dd2 initially failed hers and then immeediately passed, so we didn't think much of it. Well. I wish we had watched her more closely. she's had some trouble. NAKing, more later.
