By nine, I would think a kid pretty much knows. Not that it doesn't change.. I knew I liked boys at that age. Even though I was a complete tomboy.

But, when I was nine, I wanted to Marry Micheal Jackson. (shudders) In my defense, back then, he was normal.

My 6 year old has announced that she will either Marry her best friend Tierra or the nice boy Cody. Followed by "but can I marry a girl or do I have to marry a boy?" I told her she can marry whoever she loves and wants to live with forever when she is a grown-up. to which she replied "Maybe I'll marry Cody first so i can have some babies, then I will get divorced and marry Tierra so we can be heartlove like you and daddy matty."

i think with some people, its more obvious. i knew when we were 6 that a friend of mine was gay. i looked him up last year (were both almost 22) and guess what!

like the others said, dont pressure her or assume either way, just let her be whatever she is

I would tell her that she can marry whomever she wants and you will judge them purely on not being good enough for her, ever.

I think most girls are more girl-oriented until puberty. Some aren't but I think most are. I think that's somewhat evolutionarily protective. If young girls were routinely attracted to men I think that could case a problem.

I had no feelings towards men, or towards boys (outside of the perplexed -> disgusted continuum) until I was about 12 going on 13.

So yeah I agree with don't discount it but don't assume she's going to have sexual relationships with other women.
