Iowa City: Meet the Doulas

MEET THE DOULAS

Iowa City Doulas serve pregnant women in the Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty and surrounding area. We are a group of doulas committed to providing women in our community with prenatal, postpartum, labor and birth support.

So, what is a doula anyway? Doulas are women trained to provide non-medical support to a pregnant woman and her partner prenatally, during labor and birth, and in the immediate postpartum period. VBAC? Epidural? Unmedicated? Planned c-section? No matter what kind of birth you are hoping to have, a doula will works with a couple to define for themselves what constitutes a good birth and helps them prepare for this life-changing event, providing information on normal birth processes, hospital procedures, comfort measures, and relaxation techniques to help a couple make their child's birth the best it can be. Postpartum doulas also work in the home, providing mothers with extra support for breastfeeding and newborn care.

No, it's not. After three meetings in a row with nobody attending, I quit planning them. We are down to just one official member plus me. If there is interest and commitment by a few people to help, we can easily start it back up. I just don't have the time to devote to building it up all on my own. PM me for more info.

This is a state wide grassroots organization.

Friends of Iowa Midwives (FOIM) is hosting a Silent Auction and Potluck on Labor Day! There will be live music, dancing of several varieties, and lot of great items to auction on. This is a state wide event, come show your support for the access of out of hospital birth for the families of Iowa!

Doctor in NE Iowa

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a good doctor in NE IA. We are between Waterloo and Cedar Rapids but willing to travel for a good doctor. My kids are older so it doesn't have to be a pediatrician but could be. They are unfortunately mostly vaxed but we aren't doing any further ones. I'm looking for a doc who will be ok with that, ok with the kids taking supplements/herbs. We rarely go but on occasion we need a good doctor, one who tries to find the cause of illness preferably, not just throw meds at the symptoms. If they had experience with speical needs that would be even better. I've asked my chiropractor if she knew of any good docs but she unfortunately didn't. Thanks if you can help.

I'm going to join your thread even though I'm not technically currently an Iowan. I was born and raised in Iowa, although I am currently living in KC where my DH took a job. We plan on moving back to Iowa sometime in 2010! : I will probably be mid-pregnancy though (yikes!) and have to switch care providers. I had to do the same thing with DD and it was awful. I'm planning a hb though, so I may call some Iowa midwives once we get a positive so that I can see how to get on their calendar even though I don't know when we'll be up there. Should be interesting!

Hello Iowa Ladies!

Newbie from Independence, Iowa here.

I’m looking for a pediatrician in my area that will be supportive of our decision to delay/selectively vax. I am close to both the Cedar Rapids and Waterloo/Cedar Falls areas. Unfortunately, Iowa City is too far for me to travel for a pediatrician. If anyone has any recommendations/referrals, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much for your time!

I have not been to this dr but a friend of mine has and also really liked him and his holistic approach. She's very selective about health care providers so this is high praise from her.

Whoa-I guess things are slow around here since we were down to page 5!

CR La Leche League meets tonight, Tuesday, Nov 10 at 7pm at Birth Baby and Beyond.
Hope to see some of you there.

Our December mtg is Tuesday, Dec 8 same time/place.

FYI-We are suspending our Friday morning meetings at the Marion Library due to low attendance and the flu scare until early spring. I'll post here when we resume mtgs.

When we went last year it was in part because we'd hoped to meet other veg families. Only one other family showed up and their kids were a lot older than our son. It would be great to know in advance if any will be in attendance.

Just before Thanksgiving, my hubby got a great job in Coon Rapids, Iowa (Carroll Co) and we move in Jan 1, 2009. I have to admit i am still learning where things are, but i would appreciate any info on selective/ delayed vax friendly docs in the area, as well as groups/people nearby with similar views, one that some may call crunchy: I cloth diaper, have been a veggie since birth, etc.

Thanks, and I'll watch this thread to keep up with my new home.
