knit hat w/o dpn

I was thinking of trying a hat, but haven't even tried dpn yet. Is there a way?

I knit them flat and sew a seam... doing a variation of this one for DD right now.

Magic Loop or 2 circs!

Here's your chance to try DPNs! What's the worst that could happen?

The easiest way I learned to use dpns was by first knitting the brim so I had plenty of stitches to work with. For me, dpns are a bitch with 2 or fewer stitches on them! Argh!!
I no longer use them though. I am a magig looper, and I'd much prefer a nice long, flexible cable loop with all of my stitches divided between the two tips. Much easier. Here's a good video of what I mean. Scroll down just slightly to Magic Loop knitting.

Good luck!!
Oh, if you choose to use dpns, may the force be with you...(kidding!!).

One of my favorite hats is to knit it in the round but not do any decreases. Then at the top you fold in half and seam it shut. I like to do an icord from each resulting corner to create little strings that you then tie together to bring the hat into more of a hat shape. You can do this on 16 inch circulars instead of having to use double-points.

i generally do brim-up, with a circular that is about the same size as my head. when i start the decreases i need to switch to dpn's, but by then i don't really need to worry about twisting the stitches or anything.

personally, i love dpn's. i prefer them to straight needles, generally. i don't have to use stitch markers or keep track of my stitches, i just place the needle breaks strategically. and they make my knitting look complicated, even when it isn't. there's nothing like impressing gang members on the bus with my complex-looking knitting.

Here's one to knit flat.
I am going to give this a try this weekend.

i made this one for my dad and it was a great hit.
but i agree with the PP who said this is your chance to do DPN. they're really addictive. plus, people are so impressed when they see you using them. not that impressing people should be one's motive in knitting, but...
