Need advice

I posted this in December as well.

I am 41w5d today. I went in for a Biophysical on Wed. Everything was going great until the tech didn't see the baby take a practice breath. I think she waited about 10 minutes (i didn't know they were supposed to give it 30 min.), then she told me I needed to be induced. I started sobbing and one of my midwives walked in. She was very insensitive and matter a fact about the situation. She then explained that they usually wait 30 min. on the biophysical and they probably would have seen the baby take a breath had they waited, but since the baby is measuring 8 lb. 14 oz. they need to induce. I felt completely bullied and terrified. I think I would have fought more had my DH not been there, but he believes the practitioner knows best and we should listen to them. She said I needed to go to the hospital at 8pm for Cervidil. She checked my cervix and said she couldn't reach it (last week I was 1cm. and 70% effaced). I left the office completely devastated. I ended up talking to another midwife in the practice later in the day and she asked me if I wanted to wait a few more days and if I would be willing to do the Cervidil on Sunday or Monday (if I don't go into labor on my own before then). I was so relieved that I said yes. So here's my question: I'm going back in today for another biophysical. This time I will make sure the tech waits the 30 min. (if necessary). A nurse friend of mine said that if the baby doesn't take a practice breath in the 30 min., I can ask for a non-stress test. Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to get bullied again!

I feel like things are starting to happen. I've had prodromal labor for the past couple weeks and yesterday I felt menstrual cramps with some strong and painful pressure on my cervix that lasted a minute each time. I also had loose BMs all day.

I'm hoping the midwife is able to sweep my membranes and I'm considering doing castor oil or blue/black cohosh today/tomorrow. I had acupuncture and reflexology yesterday.

Thanks in advance!

I have had more NST's then I can count. If they are willing to let you have one before deciding on the induction, do it. You just lay there with the monitors on so they can get a good strip of heart tones and movement. They may also ask you to do a kick count during the monitoring. Since it sounds like you are having many symptoms of early labor anyway, try to relax and let it happen.

Please don't take any labor inducing remedies without the MW supervising. They are no joke, and you cold make your situation worse. IF you tried castor oil and it didn't work for instance, you would be really miserable, and then potentially have the induction to cope with on top of that. My good friend ended up with a c/s because her labor failed to progress after 30 hours when she self induced with castor oil. This time she let it happen in it's own time, and she had a beautiful HBAC after 5.5 hours of labor.

Best of luck to you mama! I hope everything happens for you today.

Just sending support!
You sound like you've got your head on straight. Don't let them bully you into anything you don't feel is right. You are in charge. However, do give yourself permission to let things go other than planned if that's what your heart is telling you.

Don't let yourself be bullied - thats really all I can say since I have no experience with this (and I'm hoping I won't b/c I'm hoping baby comes before I have to start NST's and BPP's next week)

Good luck, and go with your instincts - they aren't momma's instincts for nothing!

Thank you all for responding. I appreciate your support. My biophysical went great today. 8 out of 8

My midwife was able to sweep my membranes and she said I'm close to 3 cm. and 60% effaced. She thinks I will go into labor tonight or tomorrow. I hope she's right!!

I went to acupuncture again and I'm going to start taking blue and black cohosh (my midwife suggested it).

Thanks again!!

Awesome! It sounds like you are good to go. I will be thinking strong birthing thoughts in your direction. Perhaps the full moon will help you along as well?
