How do you cheer yourself up when you start feeling gloomy about finances or the economy (or both)? - Page 2

i am so sorry about your husband's job.

What helps me feel better is giving. Even if it's only a little, it really helps generate a sense of abundance. It doesn't even have to be financial; time and our talents are gifts, too. i think giving to others in these times reminds us how much we really do have.

I reorganize the pantry, which makes me at least feel like we won't starve in the next few weeks. And I also try to remember the plight of those in countries that experience a whole different level of poverty.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's job--my dh lost his job in October, but found another within his company right before Christmas. So, try to not to despair--miracles do happen.

When things are bad I try to think about our safety net (we're lucky to be pretty well set for a year or so) and I tried really hard to stop watching TV. There's a fine line between being informed and letting the news give you a nervous breakdown. Once the election was over I swore off tv for a bit, and it helped.

I also started going to church a lot more regularly than I used to. I'm not terribly religious but having that hour of quiet time every Sunday morning really gave me a sense of peace and helped a lot.

Hang in there.

I clean my apartment. Today I washed the wood floors with Murphy's Oil Soap. Washed the windows (inside only, it is frigid here today in Boston). Totally deep cleaned the living room. Put a green bowl of bright orange clemantines on the coffee table to counteract the winter darkness. threw out some houseplants that were not doing well, and repotted some others and bought a couple of new ones. My new blooming pink cyclamen lifts my spirits.

DH is out of the country till tomorrow, DDs are sleeping over with schoolfriends, and I am having a glass of wine, looking at my sparkling clean living room with healthy plants and planning a quiet relaxing bath and then watching Tess of the D'Urbervilles on PBS. After 8 hours of cleaning I am exhausted.

Takes my mind off the fact that another company "merged" with our and I will probably be out of a job by the end of the year. Just a case of whether it happens sooner or later.
