42w1 day by latest estimations, and I am SO THRILLED to have her earthside. I had a fantastic run at my second homebirth but her head got stuck asynclinic, my contractions petered out, I had an anterior lip and excruciating pain. After having a perfectly progressing labor with beautiful, clear SROM after becoming almost complete, and almost 3 hours of attempted pushing/resting/resetting, I made the decision to come to the hospital for pitocin and pain relief. I was in a bad, bad emotional state...I've never ever felt pain like that with either of my two labors, it was sharp and burning and BETWEEN contractions. We got to the hospital where they treated us so very respectfully, I got an IV dose of fentanyl within 30 minutes of being there (even though it was in the middle of shift change) and 30 minutes after that, I got insane pushing urges and she came into the hands of my homebirth midwife because no one else was around.
She was also friends with the attending CNM who didn't tell her to back away. having my midwife there was so great because she is well respected and they really made sure everything was as close to how we wanted it. They told me I could do whatever I wanted, wear the gown, don't wear the gown, do my monitoring in any position I was comfy, put my IV in with me standing. Everyone has said "I know this isn't what you wanted but I hope we can make your experience nice." Truthfully I know this is where I needed to be so while I'm disappointed, I'm not regretful or upset. My postpartum nurse was an apprentice homebirth midwife at one point!
It was incredibly weird birthing on the fentanyl after two unmedicated, out of hospital births...I was loopy and drunk feeling, but I think it was exactly what I needed to get over the hump of pain and wonky positioning.
Stats:
9 lbs. 3 oz (by far my biggest baby!)
20 3/4 inches
Willa Annelise
she is TOTALLY well done. Long fingernails, dry peely skin...I have less trust that babies come when ready, because seriously...I think she could have come last week.
But, I am happy and proud we let her choose her birthday. 1/09/09 is not too shabby!
She is beyond adorable, nursing well, healthy and beautiful. These last couple of weeks have been so stressful and it was worth every minute to have her here safe and sound.
The birth was not at all what I wanted or planned, but I think exactly what I needed. I have had a feeling from the very beginning of this pregnancy that this one would throw us a curveball and sure enough she did. She was breech for awhile, then with the postdates stuff I was considering induction soon. So we did end up in the hospital but not for any of the reasons I thought!
they have been treating us great. We are staying 48 hours because that's how long they like to observe 42+ week babies (dumb) but we're going along with it because I have a 2 and 4 yo at home so it will help me get some more rest. And honestly, it's pretty sweet here. They feed me and bring me snacks (including M&Ms this afternoon, and I seriously wanted to hug the lady who brought them) and pain meds and I get a Mommy Massage tomorrow.
