teaching a 3 yo to knit

My almost 4 yo ds wants to learn to knit (after seeing me do it). I'm thinking of teaching him. I thinking I'll help him make a blanket for his little fairies out of thick wool yarn so we can use pretty big needles. I'm thinking knit every row.

Has anyone tried this? Any tips? Anyone want to try to talk me out of it?

I approached my sister who is a Montessori Teacher and teaches them to knit in the classroom about this since my almost 4 yo too wants to learn. She said finger knitting is best at this age because they really can't do it until age 5.

My four year old likes to knit. He isn't interested in finger knitting. Basically "knitting" means he gets out his needles and yarn and sits in my lap and holds the needles while I knit and recites the poem from the book: Kids Knit. Is goes: Under the fence, catch the sheep, back we go, off we leap. While he isn't really practicing any of the motor skills necessary to knit when he's ready to try he will know what the process looks like. We have made a bean bag so far.

My dd is 5 1/2, I think she'd like to learn but she is a major perfectionist so she'd need videos or pics or smthg to look through, any recs?
also what size needles and yarn would you get?

Here are some items from the catalog "For Small Hands" This happens to be one of the catalogs my sisters uses for her classroom.

I too recommend finger knitting.
Also, keep a separate bag or basket of his own wool yarns, needles and notions.
My DS is almost there. He is 3 and sees DD and I knit. So far he just likes to wrap his "guys" in the balls of yarn he has in his stash. The needles end up being used as swords too.

You might want to get some raw wool and a drop spindle. Littles love to card wool and can spend all afternoon making nests, villages ect. from it

My 2 1/2 yr old and just-5 yr old love to "knit." But neither has the fine motor skills to actually do it, not even on a knitting mushroom. So mine play knit with a gauge square or knitted item and some needles. They also love sewing with some loose-weave fabric in a embroidery hoop, and a tapestry needle. My 5 yr old loves the knitting mushroom, but he needs help with the wrapping.
