I never imagined that I would have such a long pregnancy for my third child! Introducing...
Scarlett Rayne Gargan (we're calling her Rayne)
Born 1/9/09 8:50 am
7lbs 6oz; 20 1/2 inches long, head 14 inches
The night before her birth, my midwife told me she wouldn't attend me after 43 weeks. She also told me that she wanted me to take castor oil in the morning and she said some things that really upset me. Now she claims that for some moms, they need that little push. Whatever - it worked.
I pumped for 30 minutes that night. Contractions started, but were not intense. I slept from 11:30 - 3:00. I got up and started timing some contractions and playing on the web. At 4:00, I brought the pool into my bedroom and woke up hubby. At 4:45 I called the midwife. She had a 2 hour drive. My contractions didn't hurt, but they were coming at 5 minute intervals and lasting 40-60 seconds. They never got longer, but the the intervals did get shorter.
The midwife and assistant showed up at 8 am. I was in the shower. My mom and dad had come over and were watching the kids. e set up a video camera over the pool. 40 minutes later I had one intense contraction. I started bawlig before it started. There was no warning, no build up. I had another intense contraction and told everyone I was getting in the pool. The next contraction I was crowning in the pool. I had to hold back, she almost flew out with that contraction. The following contraction I guided her out myself. I felt the water break, then her head, followed by her shoulders. I tried to pull her to my chest, but the umbical cord was wrapped tightly around her neck and was short! I actually had to dip her back in the water so the midwife could unravel the umbilical cord. It was a girl!
There was a lot of meconium and thankfully the pool contained all the mess. I also had some clots that the assistant helped me to pass and they had to give me a shot off pitocin afterward. Rayne needed suctioning in case of meconium aspiration. It seems that she swallowed some, but there was none in her nasal passage, so we're hoping that she didn't inhale. She is beautiful and doing well. I'm having a little trouble nursing her - she seems to be gassy and is still spitting up some fluid occassionally, but it is clear. I am so happy that things went as they did though and now just need my milk to come in!!!
The birth was easy in my mind and looked easy I think
We are so thrilled!
