Snap Question

Why don't the cheaper plastic or metal snaps from JoAnns work on home-sewn diapers?

I would imagine it would be because you need something really durable since diapers get so much wear & tear with being washed.

I suppose you COULD use them and sew them on, but like you said, they're cheap... you COULD technically also use the cheap hook & loop and such... but again, cheap, and not likely to hold up long.

That's what I would assume. But I'm not 100% sure. Hopefully someone else can chime in on this.

Anyone out there with first-hand experience? Failed snaps, etc?

In my experience, the metal snaps (even the hammered ones) tend to either fall off, rust or poke the baby. They are also a lot more expensive per snap than the polyresin ones (which are about $.02 per piece). The spendy part of the polyresin snaps is the press to apply them, but they also have a great resale value, and I put snaps on so much more than diapers now.
The velcro brand velcro is not meant for the heavy washing and drying that a cloth diaper goes through. I used some and it just wasn't sticky anymore after about 2 months. I bought some aplix and touch tape online and that worked much better, those diapers are still going strong. I prefer snaps on all my diapers now though because then I don't have to worry about laundry tabs or diaper snake chains coming out of the dryer.

Hope that helped!

I went ahead and bought snap pliers and heavy duty metal snaps with my 50% off coupons over the weekend and have experiemented. They work! Nothing is poking out and they were easy to install. I would recommend this method to anyone who only needs a few snapped diapers and doesn't want to deal with the hassle of buying and reselling a commercial press. My total cost was $10.50 plus tax.

OH the dreaded diaper snake chain! I found that if I turn the diaper wrong side out and closing the diaper as normal works pretty well. Also I know that I have to clean out the velcro a lot to remove all the lint and little pieces of string or thread that gets stuck in there to make it stick better.

I have used them. They work. they probably just wear out faster than the polyresin ones. I wouldnt recommend the "decorative" ones with plastic because they tend to crack in the snap pliers. i also have only used them on covers, which I can hang to dry in a short time, so that cuts out a bit on the wear and tear

I tried the hammered in metal snaps (some from Joann and some that I ordered online) and they rusted after two months or so. A few also fell out, and one resulted in metal prongs sticking out. Disappointing.
