ITA

We bought a diaper sprayer once we introduced solids because I just couldn't stand dunking and swishing in the toilet.

He only likes the sposies when he's out with her b/c he doesn't have to worry about changing her or it soaking thru her clothes, but I think if we had some PUL covers for that it'd be ok. You have to change wool more frequently b/c if it's compressed against a wet dipe it will soak thru.
Mine too Em. He balks at 'sposies. When I buy a pack of them (we've bought two total since Hazel was born), he complains and refuses to use them. He uses the prefolds almost exclusively. It's just too much for his manbrain to handle learning all the different kinds. When they're hanging up to dry and not yet folded and put onto the changing table, he'll take Hazel with him nakey butt to the laundry room just to get a pf and cover instead of reaching for the 'sposie in the drawer.

AAM: I go back to work on Tuesday and am so, so sad. It would be easier if Hazel was doing well with my mom watching her. Apparently she cried from when I left this morning at 7:15 until she passed out at 9:30. She also only took 4 oz total from the bottle, but I can live with that as she's going to be brought to me to nurse twice a day when I go back.

I hear ya on the small baby jennifer! ally rae is only 11lbs and just started wearing 0-3mo clothes and size 1 sposies last week! she's just so petite....like mommy i guess. which raises a question....are one-size's really one size? i'm afraid ally's so small they wouldn't fit right. i'm not too concerned with stuffing but only because the friend of mine that uses bg's just lays the insert in and says it works great. she has a smaller baby girl too. i like the idea of the os bg's because the investment would be less with not having to buy multiple sizes. it's going to be a challenge to get dh to agree to all of this as is....it'd help if i could say it's a one-time purchase. i'm thinking i'll buy a couple os and see how they work. thoughts?

First thing- OMG do NOT ever just lay a micro insert into a diaper. That is literally dangerous. It will do some serious damage to her skin. You might wanna mention that to your friend. I mean, really. Please don't do that. It will sponge the moisture out of her skin very quickly.

Second- No, OS diapers are absolutely NOT one size. They're most size. They don't fit small babies well and they usually only go to 30 pounds or so. THis all depends on shape of course but for most people, no. She should be big enough now for OS diapers and if she's petite then they ought to last her a lot longer as well.

OMG...did you just say care plan?? Those were the bane of my existence in RN school. I was so uninterested in them and they seemed so tedious. I am a little scared about my procrastinating habits now, though, as this is grad school and I am finally doing what I want to with my nursing career.

We better stop now about nursing school woes...we don't want to freak Em out!

On dunking dipes: I second a diaper sprayer! We had one with the boys and it made life so much easier. When we moved 2 years ago we left it at our old house. I need to get a new one soon.

On one size dipes and little babes: Iris is a peanut like Ally Rae (also thanks to her mama) and I've had decent luck with os dipes. BG 3.0s seem to fit her the best, although they are huge on her wee butt. That's why I really love pfs..they're cheap and they have pretty good longevity. So far we've used our pfs on 3 kiddos.

On returning to work: Right now I am t minus a week and counting til I go back. I hear ya Jenn on being sad about it. I started bawling when I was nursing I, thinking that next week I'll have to get up at night to go in to work and leave her all snuggled in bed with dh. Thankfully she takes her milka in a bottle well.

: to all the CD talk! I'm using prefolds with Thirsties covers, and while it's going just fine I'd really like to get a set of Motherease one-size. My DH has trouble with the prefolds and using the Snappis no matter how many times I show him, and when my mom watches Eleanor she also doesn't like the Snappis - her fingers aren't nimble enough to manage it. Now that DH has won this huge award I'm hoping I can use a little of the money to buy the diapers, especially since we'll hopefully be able to use them with our next baby as well. : Just one question - is it necessary to get covers with them? That's the impression I'm getting, but I want to be sure.

Eleanor had her 3-month birthday yesterday!

Yes.

Thanks for the heads-up Changed! I'll let my friend know that laying inserts in the dipes is dangerous. I'm surprised she doesn't know that....she's really knowledgable about natural mama things....??? Maybe she's using just a cloth piece and not true inserts? I dunno. I'll make mention.

So, I've just discovered Mommy's Touch OS AIO's.....thoughts? I love the idea of something so simple...the best of both worlds...one size and AIO! I think that's ideal for me. But, I don't think their OS looks as easy to adjust as the BG OS. I like that the BG's snap down to change the rise. It looks like Mommy's Touch just adjusts at the waist and not at the rise. ???

ETA: You all are awesome! Thanks so much for helping me with my posible transition to CD'ing! Now I just have to convince DH to let me spend $400 all at once.....

But staying home just isn't an option financially. It stinks. At least once the free daycare runs out, she'll be home with DH. So that's a positive. I hate working, too. I'm so angry all the time. I so totally understand what you're saying.

That would break my heart to hear. How nice you'll get to nurse her 2 times a day! I wish I weren't just pumping, it stinks.

s to you, too.

I'm actually happily surprised to know I'm not the only working (out of the home) mama here. I thought I was the only one not staying at home, and I felt really bad about it.

Oh yikes... Tara.. I wouldn't throw in a request for $400 worth of stuff right away !

Honestly I think you should take it slow try a few diff kinds before you 'choose' one kind.

I really love prefolds.. and they are so economical .. I don't think I've spent much more then $150.. at least less then $200 .... for dipes in the past two yrs (NOT at once) for all my boys to be in dipes..
^Oh I didn't plan to ask for that right away. I'll absolutely buy a couple random ones and see what I like and go from there. I was planning to ask him if I can spend $50-$60 to get a few to try and go from there. The good thing is DH is a numbers guy and if I can lay out how much we'll save in the long run and give some good stats on why CD'ing is best for baby I think I can make it happen. (Got a good site for health benefits of CD'ing anyone???) I know we can afford it but DH likes to know why we're spending money before it's spent. No biggie.

Tara- Babyworks has an awesome return policy. You can buy something, try it out, wash it, and return it for full price if you're dissatisfied. The owner & other employees are super helpful as well. This way you can try something without being out the cost of a full diaper.

A good article on the benefits:

A great Mothering article!!:
http://www.mothering.com/articles/ne...-of-cloth.html
I love this quote, "Parents look at a diaper as a container that doesn't leak and can be left on for eight hours, instead of looking at it as clothing worn on the most sensitive parts of the body. Shouldn't we b e changing babies when they wet?" Adds Erica Froese, owner of Mother-Ease Diapers, "A diaper is not meant to be used as a toilet." :

Tara: I didn't go with pockets b/c I heard they are a pain to dry. I have a few AIOs from LoveyBums that are wool covers on the outside and a diaper with doubler inside. I like them a lot. If you are unfamiliar with wool covers, they are super soft and silky, not itchy like we traditionally think of wool as being. Wool is for your money a much better value as they hold up. We spent the money we did b/c we want them for our next child as well. That is a good way to put it to your DH...these can be used for more than one child.

My DH loves the wool covers and he actually is very good about washing them and hanging them in the window to sun the stains out. I hardly get a chance to wash them so yes, I feel lucky for that. He gets mad when we are out and about and run out of prefolds. He almost refuses to use disposables so makes sure to overstock the bag when we leave the house.
As for sizing, Jasper is pretty small...around 11 pounds now and I am gonna try him in some Goodmama one size diapers. I will report back.

Changed: I had never heard that re. inserts. Does that include hemp doublers with terry on top? I was thinking of using these to help with pulling wetness from his skin. He pees so much. Please fill me in!

Jenn: How was your bath?

Ooops...Jasper is crying! Be back in a bit to talk about our yoga class together.

Dang, that's a great deal. Right about now I'm wishing I'd bought from them.

Ugh. It seems that he's outgrown his medium diapers. His little feet are turning color and he's got deep red marks on his legs. I feel so guilty that I haven't noticed but he's been wearing footie sleepers for the last 2 weeks a LOT because I've been staying home so much.
No, just the funky feeling mircofiber inserts like BG, HH and FB have.
^Good to know...thanks! Can you use inserts that aren't the micro in pocket dipes and just lay them in? Like a hemp or a cotton soaker? I hope I'm saying all this correctly...I'm still learning what all these things are....

Thanks for the links Jenn and OrchideZ! I'll definitely check those out. My newest find is SAP's were taken out of tampons and not sposies....I'm shocked! If my girlie parts are in danger why aren't my daughter's???

Hmmmm.... Now you got me thinking.... I don't bathe. Well... I don't take baths. We do have a wood-fired non-chlorinated hottub though.

The purpose of cloth diapers, my dear Tara, are to keep your LO's tushie dry with the fleece (or whatever it may be) layer. The peepee goes through the fleece and into the absorbent material. So putting a hemp or cotton doubler in between baby and fleece would defeat the purpose. I stuff my pocket dipes after I wash them and then stack them "ready to fasten" on my changing table. For the person diapering, it's extremely easy.

My pocket dipes are very easy to dry, but they are tricky to wash if you have hard water I hear (we have soft here in Portland). If they have buildup on them, they can repel instead of absorb. I just wash mine with Charlie's on hot/cold with a prewash and 2nd rinse. Then they go in the dryer for 59 minutes on medium.

AIOs (with pockets I guess would be AI2s) are difficult to dry because they tend to be so thick. That said, I have some AIOs and they dry after 90 minutes on medium. I love those AIOs, BTW. They are fairly trim and pretty affordable IMO.
Tara it totally depends on what style of diaper you go with, some benefit from additional layers such as doublers or such to keep baby dryer/go longer between changes some don't.

I use prefolds and generally use a layer of fleece (just scrap I cut up) to keep baby dryer and sometimes throw in some home-made hemp doublers as well if it'll be a while before we change.

And yes it's just the microfiber doublers/products that shouldn't touch babies skin.. most doublers are fine.

OMG - Do it! I love my motherease one sizes - They've fit Lars Oskar since about 10 pounds (he's 16 now) and will continue to fit to about 35lbs. They are the best - they clean well, are absorbent, don't leak at the legs and I haven't had a single blow out, and L.O. doesn't get a rash with them. Pair them with a well lanolized wool cover, and I'm in diaper heaven.

Sure. Hemp, terry, cotton... all fine on the skin or in the pocket.

Mommy'sTouch- Now, these are bulky on a teeny baby but they are seriously OS. B can wear them... only does at home because they ARE bulky but my 4 year old sleeps in one every night. I have 2 of the AIO's and 2 of the easy clean pockets. Honestly, over all they're wonderful and the quality is GREAT. They are a little harder to make smaller than BG BUT since they're snaps- you don't have to snap and unsnap with washing. Just when you need to move sizes. So in the long run much easier. A dozen will run you about 250$

Tara- I like the bg 3.0, and had Bryson in them since he was 9 pounds or so on the smallest snap with the newborn inserts in the pocket. I moved to the middle snap with the snapped inserts and they didn't work as well (firehose perhaps-- may not be an issue with Ally, and since I never used them with a girl...). Out of frustration on the leakage from the middle snaps I transitioned to unsnapped pretty quickly. I thought they'd be huge but his belly button already shows above his dipes! You're right his bum is biggg with them on, but I love the cloth. I saw a dozen bg 3.0's on sale for 170 or something close to that at cottonbabies the other day (I think, but it was a google search for bg 3.0 that turned it up and it was one of the first results.) on the $ side, they've already paid for themselves in the 11 weeks we've been at it, although I can't measure the water or electric costs since we had a few anomalies in our bill on each front for other reasons.

Zimbah made the comment about 'sposies at night for dryness, and we're just the opposite. Our CD's are the only way to go at night, even when we travel b/c they contain so much more.

aam: Whew! The IL's cancelled their visit to us this weekend. I guess it's okay with them that we'll be at their place on Friday night, so technically they'll see us. But, here we go in another round of disappointing DD. They were going to take her to the snow on Sunday! Now I have more time to clean before my dinner guests arrive Sunday night.

DS ate constantly last night. I'm soooo tired.

ETA: My LMP was a year ago today! This is the day that Bryson's gestation was dated from last year. It's really strange to be getting to the point where we were pregnant "only a year ago"!
