The code is TWW2009 for 15% off-it expires Jan 31st. Perhaps a good time to stock up on toys before they are possibly outlawed in the US.......

The Wooden Wagon is my source for birthday ring ornaments. I love the Wooden Wagon!

I got our birthday ring there too. I actually have a few things in my cart right now! Perfect excuse to pull the trigger!

Adam there is SO nice! I had just run to order my advent spiral after seeing all the posts here on Friday and a few hours later, got the email about the code from them. I asked if they'd still give me the discount and Adam happily agreed. You have to LOVE customer service like that!

Can you tell me more about how you use the birthday rings? Like, if the child is 4, do you put 4 candles and fill all the other holes with ornaments? And do you just have lots of ornaments and they choose which ones they want to put in for that birthday? Or are the ornaments something that you give them on days leading up to their birthday as presents? So when they get older, there is less room for ornaments, when they are ten for example, so is that hard for them to choose which ones to choose? It would be like getting rid of an ornament each year. Or does it not really work like that.

I love the idea but am having a hard time thinking about how it would actually be, in a concrete way. Thanks!

I was having some problems picturing it too and did some reading. Looks like there are quite a few ways you can do it. The basic one seems to be replacing one ornament with a candle each year to show the passing of time.

I got the advent spiral so that I can also use it like an advent calendar (count-down to Christmas for us) as well as a birthday ring. And I like that it's separate pieces so I can use a couple of the pieces to make nature table displays and things. I prefer things with multiple uses whenever possible! I only ordered a couple of ornaments for now (springy ones). We just finished up birthdays so I've got a whole year to come up with enough ornaments for the next one! I think for the Christmas countdown, I'll just add a candle each day rather than lots of ornaments. Simpler.

We use ours more like a Montessori birthday celebration. I have a yellow star candle holder in the middle of our ring (to be the sun) and 4 ornaments in the ring symbolizing the 4 seasons. We have candles representing each year. We also have photos from birth and each birthday (right now since there is room --on the ring in the photo holders from The Wooden Wagon, but eventually in a small book) We light the candle in the center and talk about her birth, then talk about that the seasons went by and then it was her birthday and light a candle and on and on until you get to the right age.

In a Montessori classroom birthday celebration the children sit in a circle with a candle in the middle(the sun). The birthday child brings pictures of themselves form the last year, often in all seasons and the walk the circle (like the earth around the sun) holding another candle until the come around to the starting point symbolizing they are another year older.

We use ours with one candle per year of birth, the number for the birthday (3 for the 3rd birthday, for example) and then one with a picture holder. I let DS pick out the rest of the ornaments on the morning of his birthday. DD just turned 1 so I picked those out myself.

We also set it out during holidays, with every other hole filled with an ornamnet and then a candle. On Christmas I had a picture of the nativity.

I actually just found some little blank peg people at Joann's that fit the whole so I'm going to start adding little felt clothes and make people.
