If you use progesterone: how long after O do you test/quit?

I've used progesterone from ovulation on and off, and usually quit when hpt is still negative day 12-14 or so. With my pregnancies I've always tested positive by day 12.
Of course, I always read stories from women who tested positive very late or never, so I'm always a bit worried about quitting too soon.
How long do you take the progesterone / when do you consider a - hpt a true negative?

When I used it during my LP, I stopped when AF arrived.

I take Prometrium vaginally and I take it from CD3 - CD13 because my natural LP is only about 9 days long so I figure that CD13 is plenty long enough for me to get a BFP. Once I quit it, I get AF within 2 -3 days.

Thanks for your replies.
Stevi, I was just wondering - do you still get AF when using progesterone? Do you use it intravaginally? I was always under the impression that it kept AF away until you discontinue, that's why I'm always struggling as to when to quit..
I've gone 17 days or so before without getting AF, though.
My normal lp is also 8-10 days or so, PaytonPlace. I still worry though that a BFP might show up later..

I have used ProgonB and Progesterone Cream (at different cycles), neither held off AF. It's been awhile since I used either one, so I don't recall the details.
