I'm always hungry after dinner.

No matter how much animal protein & fat I eat, I still crave *something* after dinner. A mug of warmed raw milk with a drizzle of maple syrup & nutmeg would take care of it....possibly hot tea, but it'd have to have cream, ice cream, yum - so I think it's full fat dairy I'm craving. Or maybe just something mildly sweet.

Nutritionally (or digestively) can you figure out why I have these cravings?

Do you?

Just saw that cereal thread - before becoming a TFer, years ago I used to eat cereal like crazy. Almost every night I'd have a bowl of cereal with whole milk after dinner. Might be that dairy thing again...or sugar....

My husband and I are the same way...its like we just want something sweet after dinner. I just figured it was because we addicted to sugar or something lol.

I am the same way. i just figured, like the PP, that i needed to take a break from sugar.

maybe it is the whole fat dairy thing.

I am pretty new to TF and raw milk and I crave that raw milk all the time now! It is soooo freaking good! I think about it a lot and when I do down a nice cold glass it is so nice! I know it sounds crazy but I don't care, I usually relish it with my 2 dds and we giggle about how wonderful it is.

The funny thing is that I have HATED milk my whole life! I started getting raw milk for my kids and one day I tried it because they said it was so good and I couldn't believe how good it was......

What about a piece of fruit after dinner...we all just shared an apple for dessert and that helps my want for sweet.

A craving and hunger are two different things... which is it?

It sounds more like a craving than hunger, if you'd just finished dinner, in which case I would be thinking sugar addiction. IMO the best way to deal with that craving is detoxing from sugar.

I have found that when I go for several weeks with no sugar, I don't crave it any more. However, I still want a small something after dinner. I am pretty good about differentiating between sugar and hunger at that point. I have found that a small bowl of frozen blueberries, cherries, or both will satisfy that "craving" or whatever it is. Or a small bowl of cream and frozen blueberries. I think part of it for me, is just a habit. We eat dessert after supper sort of thing. I've retrained myself to be able to not have something full of sugar and white flour, but I still enjoy something, and the frozen blueberries satisfy it for me. The other thing I enjoy is a small square or two of really good dark chocolate once in awhile.

newcastlemama, an apple doesn't cut it for me, unless I pair it with some peanut butter or cheese. I think that fat is really important for me.

Good point, Cristeen. It mustn't be hunger since I eat large portions of fatty, high protein foods at mealtimes.

I wonder about sugar though, because a bowl of raw cream with blueberries would take care of it, which makes me think of the fat rather than the sugar. Or a dairy allegry.

I don't know about that. I don't feel very satisfied with meals no matter how much protein and fat I eat unless I eat a fair amount of carbs too.

It used to be that I'd be craving anything sweet after a meal, but I've found lately that in all reality the only thing that does it for me is full fat dairy - like the raw cream/blueberries (or ice cream). No idea as to the source for me.

If i don't eat enough carbs at dinner, I want something after dinner. It's not so bad if I eat a carby dinner though. But, it does get worse if I indulge in sugar for a week or so.

That's so good ot know! I hate milk, like seriously hate it. I poured a glass of this non homoginized stuff I got from a local dairy everyone loves, and couldn't even finish a sip. So I may love raw milk!!

I am having the damnedest time feeling full after meals of no carbs. I know I must be because I just ate a big old chunk of meat and fat but omgosh I still feel like I could eat and eat and eat.

why are you eating no carbs at the meal? just curious....

the milk has to be cold, don't drink it warm.....I mean from one "milk-hater" to another....

the diary thing makes sense because we usually crave something with dairy in it after dinner.

I'm just trying to be more low carb to lose 90lbs by September so I can get pregnant!! Well, I'll get pregnant anyway but it'd be nice to be thinner

I lost 20 lbs from 4/08 to 6/08 on weight watchers!!!
now that I think about it, I am not happy I did it that way but it was nice to lose the weight....
the thing is I kept on losing, slowly but surely, until I was down to 123 (at 5'7") and I was getting a little too thin, then I started eating TF and I stopped losing.....good thing is I'm now at 125 and I feel it is an ideal weight for me....I haven't gained or lost since I started about 3 months ago.

so anyway, I was told that my weight loss may be connected to my 3 yr old's cavities....
they said the mercury in my fillings has slowly been seeping into my body over the past 20-30 years and since you store toxins in your bodyfat, when you lose a lot of weight it travels out of your body through your breastmilk (and placenta) and so my darling little breastfed toddler was ingesting mercury-laden milk for a while there.....
I don't get too dramatic about this because it is what it is, but I thought I'd let you know, in case you have amalgam fillings and you plan to continue to bfeed as you lose weight....

also, I want to say that if you make lots of veggies (although you probably already do this) and have them with dinner, you may feel really full.
Like, I had tabouli, salad, broccoli and a small piece of country bacon for dinner and I'm pleasantly full. And I always have beet kvass before dinner and take CLO with fresh-squeezed lemon after, so I'm totally satisfied right now.

I always start my meals with salad or sauerkraut and then move on to a green and then I eat the meat or cheese stuff and add some carbs, but at that point, I only need like 2 mouthfuls of something, to feel satisfied (and usually I eat it because it looks good and not because I'm still hungry).
In the morning I start with yogurt or kefir and then just have eggs, it's very satisfying (I occasionally have it with bacon, yum)

I think the key is portions. But I understand how you feel about the carbs because I do think that is why so many people gain weight....

oh also, when I first started trying to lose weight I obviously had to cut down on my portions, that's basically how I did it all the way through actually, but I felt hungry often because my body was just used to feeling over-full all the time. That part was habit and not related to deficiencies (although I'm sure I had that) because after a few weeks it went away. And the less you weigh, the less you need to eat so it kind of perpetuates itself in a way. Your portions should always be decreasing with the weight. The problem with WW was that it didn't matter what I ate. Now I know that it does matter greatly. AND I feel sooooooo much healthier!

That's so funny you mention Weight Watchers. I am actually eating TF lowish carb ( I still have potatoes and rice and stuff, just nothing processed) but just within ww points. I use a calculator.

I'm super happy for everyone who can lose weight tf alone, but I'm extremely overweight and need to be told my limits!

: Oh, my, I want that.

It's funny, because I'm pregnant I think of cravings as incredibly informative. I know they can sometimes be related to addictive/cyclic substances, though. But aside from that issue, I would say pay attention and trust it.

Mmmm, the blueberries.....

actually, if you take away the content of what WW is saying (ie: low-fat, low calorie) and you use just the points system then I can see how it could work. I also needed that guideline or else I never would have learned to eat less. But the good thing is that those habits have remained. I weigh myself every 4-5 days.
