merpk: A Canticle for Leibowitz is on my top 10, too. You're one of the few (the proud, the well-read ) who has it on her's, too!

Aside from seconding Canticle, I also like anything by Ursula Le Guinn (Very Far away from Anywhere Else, any of the Earthsea books, The Telling -- very appropriate right now!! -- Orsinian Tales, Compass Rose, The Beginning Place, Left Hand of Darkness, Lathe of Heaven, The Birthday of the World, Four Ways to Forgiveness.....etc.).

A Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil, Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg.

Most everything by Gore Vidal.

I second (or third?) short stories. They are great for people with kids. I like Raymond Carver, Roald Dahl, and Chekov.

My 5 favorites are The Temple of My Familiar by Alice Walker, Jane Eyre (have read that one at least 5 times and loved it every time) The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, (anything by Toni Morrison!) Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins, and Imajica by Clive Barker (it's not scary).

Books to make you laugh: White Boy Shuffle by Paul Beatty. If you like "The Boondocks" you will love this one. Naked by David Sedaris if you want to laugh so hard you pee your pants. Bridget Jones diary also LOL funny and very easy to read. Great for situations where you may be interrupted as it requires very little concentration! Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott.

If you like scary surreal woo-woo books read House of Leaves by a guy whose name I can't remember, I think it's Danielewski?

Have fun!

I liked I Don't Know How She Does It. It seemed like The Nanny Diaries from the mom's point of view.

organicbanana, I had a copy of the Anotated Alice ... and it disappeared. Absolutely disappeared.

Devastating.

I just typed the longes post and lost it to cyberspace I hate that!!

Anywho...I really liked some on liz-hippymoms list~and added those I hadn't read to my "library list". thanks!

Earths CHildren series
( The clan of the cave bear) THese are wonderful books to read, but some of it is hard to get through for me because I tend to skim some of the scenery parts. Once I listened to them on tape/CD I absolutely loved the entire series. THe reader is phenominal!! Highly, Highly recomemded.

Pillars of the Earth
I love all of Ken Follet, but you kind of have to be in the right frame of mind for all of his others, kwim? Not for this one though...it is great!! THis is one that i have recommended to many and they all liked it. Although, I can't tell you what it was that i loved about it because it has been so long since i have read it: I think I need to pick this one up again. Don't let the length turn you away...its' quick!

Mother Earth, Father Sky (series)
I just read the first two of this series and really liked both...I have to go get the last one.

The Secret Life of Bees
I just finished this one (20 minutes ago ) and had to come to mothereing for more recommendations, since that is where I got the idea to read that one. What a great, quick read! There are some quotes from it that i absolutely loved!!! I have also been told that it is also phenominal on tape ( and quite a different experience than reading!) and plan on listening to it soon!

Hmm...my list could go on and on, but I think I better stop now. I am definately still "high" from getting to read so many books of my choice over christmas break!! Now its back to school for me!!

that's the only ken follett i've ever read (the subject matter of his other books just never appealed to me - when i worked in bookstores i remember shelving them, but never feeling compelled to crack a cover...) but it came highly recommended to me by a good friend...
i liked it a lot too; the only dry parts for me were some of the more drawn out, technical, architectural cathedral descriptions. the story itself was great.

i might get a new copy someday, but i'll keep this one too. so much fascinating information...
lewis carroll is my favorite.

Oh my gosh - I just finished the book "Naked" that someone suggested and it was one of the best books I ever read. It was so funny but sad too. I want to read his other book now.

Anyone who knows other books similar to that one, I'd love to read more like it.

Mmm, anything by Marge Piercy but especially her sci-fi: Woman on The Edge of Time and He, She, It.

American Gods, Neil Gaiman.

also almost anything by Sherri S. Tepper, good feminist sci-fi/fantasy. Especially the Family Tree and singer in the Sea.

oh drat, I can't remember his name
