Book ideas for a 3 year old

What is your 3 year old's favorite book? My DS is turning 3 in a few days and H and I wanted to get him a couple of new books for his b-day. DS is interested in all sorts of stuff - from soccer, to golf, to dinosaurs, to Batman and Superman, trains, airplanes, etc.,

Would love to get a few suggestions/ideas on what is considered the most favorite or what you like to read to your LO's.

We like the "Llama llama..." books by Anne Dewdney, "Bear Snores On" and other Bear books by Karma Wilson, and "Cars, Trucks and Things That Go" by Richard Scarry. Also, the "How do Dinosaur..." books by Jane Yolen if your DS likes dinos. Hope that helps!

At that age my DS really started liking the Magic Tree House books. I had to change some of the words (the kids call each other "stupid/dummy" sometimes, and in the Mummy book there are some pretty scary descriptions), but for the most part they were just exciting enough without being scary. Now, at 4, he's not as interested in them, but he loved them at age 3!

They were his first chapter books, and he felt very grown up. But they also had a couple of pictures per chapter, so there was something for him to look at and connect to the story.

Mine has been obsessed with the original AA Milne Winnie-The-Pooh books for the past year or so!

dd really enjoys chapter books by now (just turned 3 at the end of dec), especially Henry and Mudge series and Frog and Toad series. She is also very interested in folktales, which is fun for me too.

And the Frog and Toad books are absolutely marvellous for 3yos (and anyone else).

My 3 yr old also likes the A.A. Milne Pooh books. And Frog and Toad, and Little Bear. And Thomas the Tank Engine stories - both the originals by Rev. W. Awdry, and the ones based on the TV shows. The original stories are better, but not dramatically so - not like A.A. Milne compared to Disney Pooh. He also really likes Margaret Wise Brown's Wonderful Story Book, which is out of print but worth looking for if you're at a used book store.

We're loving Heckedy Peg by Audrey Wood. It's a folktale and is wonderful.

Also Jim Arnosky has a new one with a CD of him singing the book & it's great - Gobble it up!

I have a Frog and Toad book at home. I found it at a garage sale two summers ago and about fell out when I saw it. My Mom used to read that to me when I was DS's age and a little older!!

Another vote for Frog & Toad, you can often find them as a collection so that way you get plenty of stories.

I've been nudging dd1 (3.5 yo) towards chapter books, since I find them so much more interesting to read . We did Charlotte's Web, but a lot went over her head. We are now doing the "Ramona" series by Beverly Cleary (Beezuz and Ramona, Ramona the Pest, etc.), and that is going over well. I tried the Milne Pooh books, but they seemed way too old for her.

Frog and Toad and The Magic Tree House books are on my list to look into the next time we go to the library .

Aw, I love Frog & Toad (probably more than ds!). We also like:

Curious George
anything by Richard Scarry (ds loves these but I get a little bored...)
