I just finished listening to this on CD last night (hmm, Julia Roberts did not read the version I had *pout*) Anyway, there were some definite writing weaknesses; for example:
Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
(her reaction to finding out that Mrs. X was the second wife)
and I'm not quite sure I would call it satire, though I think it was meant to be. It just hit too close to home. I sat through it (while driving from MD to CT and back, taking us very close to NYC) and kept hoping the authors were exagerating, that these people don't really exist. I was a nanny for 2 summers and I had the best bosses. The first summer I watched one little girl. I was live-in. We had a good time, and I was friendly with my boss. That winter I came to stay with her part of the week during winter break from college so that I could go to the job I'd gotten for the school year. The next summer, I watched the same little girl and 2 girls that lived in the neighborhood. They were so great; they arranged their work schedules so that I could keep my other job!! (it just meant getting home a little early 2 days a week)
Anyway, one other point of discussion. What do ya'll think ever happened to H.H.? I theorized that because he was never given a name we are to assume he turned out to be a jerk. I mean, Mrs. X insinuates towards the end that he went to Europe to join his ex-gf. Thoughts?
