I just saw Doubt yesterday, and I was totally blown away. Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?
Of course, looking back at these 1964 happenings, we *know* what was happening. But I'm assuming that molestation by priests was a huge secret at the time.
The whole movie, I, like Amy Adams, wanted so badly to think the priest was innocent. I'm such a Philip Seymour Hoffman fan, and I really thought he played it like the priest was innocent. And since they didn't come right out and say what happened, do you think he *was* innocent?
My Protecting The Gift knowledge was telling me his reactions were wrong. I thought Meryl Streep was too quick to accuse, and wonder if she felt guilty at not having caught it quickly enough at her last school. Did you think that? Or do you think she just immediately recognized it because of her prior experience?
Did you get the impression that other boys in addition to Donald were possibly being targeted? What did you think of the mother? I really resented her equating gay=child molester. I realize that's not an uncommon assumption, but it made me so sick.
And at the end, when Meryl Streep burst into tears, I admit I really choked up. To see that tough, smart woman brought to her knees by the church hierarchy b.s., and for her to know she was powerless to prevent the priest for moving on to another set of kids, I just felt such sympathy for her.
Sorry to go on and on, but I can't stop thinking about this movie!
