a few questions:

1. wdyt is the easiest cd to use on a nb?

2. what is your favorite cd for a nb?

3. what do you think is a good nb stash?

we're expecting again in august and will cd from the start, didn't cd dd until she was 5 months old. i have no clue what diaper(s) i want to use and need some help figuring it out.

Hey Melrose! We're due in Aug, too.

Like you, I didn't start cd until my ds was a little older, but this time around, I plan to use primarily infant pf's with covers for the first while. I will get a few fitteds, too, for going out, because I feel the fitted with a cover hold poo a bit better. I already have a selection of one-size pockets, so I'll use those, too. But my main go-to will be prefolds. Those bitty babes just poop so darn much, I just don't want to wear out my pockets!

I realized I skipped a few of your questions.

I'll probably get 2 doz inf pfs
6-8 nb fitteds
6 nb covers

I have about 8 one-size pockets I'll use sometimes, too.

Like you, I am starting from the beginning this time as well, having started at 6 months with DS. I am primarily planning to use fitteds for newborn stage and I am getting a lot of them!

12 Kissaluvs (I have heard great things about their Size 0s)
14 Nanipoos (off Hyenacart.com- very affordable and sooooo nicely made!)
8-12 Thirsties fab fitteds (they have velcro so I think DH and grandparents will use them)
12 newborn prefolds (probably mostly as back up, although I have heard of many people who love these the most for newborn stage)

I will be knitting some wraps, shorties, longies and soakers and buying a few as well. I hope that helps!

My SIL loved her kissaluvs and swore by them for nb. I've heard the larger sizes don't fit as well, but folks swear by the 0's. I've accumulated 6 of these and made 4 of my own ripoffs. I'm going to try and have 1.5 doz kissaluvs-style fitteds and 2 dozen prefolds. I'm gonna use a mix of poly and wool covers. I want to try the niji wraps in wool; I have one second hand, and I have one cute wahm wrap. I'd like a few more wool wrap style for the trimmer fit, but I also plan to make some soakers for night time and cold weather. I'm sewing them from recycled sweaters. As soon as my machine gets back from the doctor, that is .

Hi! I started with ds from the beginning also....I think KL0's and newborn pf's and covers would be easiest on a newborn. I say think because I bought 3 dz. between the two of those and never got to use them on ds because he was to big for them at birth.

Again my favorite would have been KL0's. Although the BG 3.0's (which thankfully had already bought to use when he got to the weight he was born at! ) fit him good and worked really well.

I think a good newborn stash would be this. (which is what I had)

18 KL0's
18 GMD Orange edge pf's
8 newborn covers......

This is what I got by with.....

13 BG 3.0's

I used mostly prefolds and covers. I did have some fitteds that I made and my friend let me borrow 6 fuzzi bunz which was nice for out and about. I really did not want to invest a lot in diapers I knew they would be out of in no time and I had twins too so we went through a ton of diapers.

We use prefolds the first few weeks.

here's what i did

first week, with a sensitive little belly button i just swaddled her up with a gmd orange edge prefold under her butt. it just felt wrong to strap a diaper or anything else to her when she was so brand new.
after her umbilical cord came off and her belly button healed up some i used the orange edge prefolds folded in thirds in a thirsties xs cover.
worked AMAZING!! loved every minute of this combo, pretty much as easy as sposies!

here's what i had

48 orange edge greenmountain prefolds
6 thirsties covers
24 preemie prefolds from gmd for doublers at night
2 "daddy diapers" Kissaluvs size 0 (she hated these, dont know why)

i had a lot of prefolds because i change really frequently and i did diaper laundry about every 3 days, makes for a nice relaxed schedule.
and you can never have enough prefolds around the house! they are great for EVERYTHING! i use them to clean, for puke rags, when my let-down is too strong and they pick up dust like magic!

have fun cding your new baby!

I love fitteds and wool for a newborn. I made most of my stash this time around, but here are a few of my favorite retail/WAHM ones:

Fitteds:
nb mutts
nb swaddlebees velour
nb loveybums

Wool Covers:
NB loveybums

PUL Covers:
NB Imse Vimse

I have 18 fitteds, 6-8 covers (some are longies that I knit), and about 6 AIOs that I made. I wash every other day. I have infant prefolds for back up, and I'll use those once my LO outgrows the fitteds. I found the fitteds fit until about 6 weeks with my last LO, with some lasting to 8 weeks. She was 8.8 lbs at birth and grew at a steady pace. Looks like it will be about the same this time around .

Also, swaddlebees outlet has some covers still left on sale...I haven't used them yet, but they look nice, and $5.99 is a great price!

I love newborn fluff :

I stuck with prefolds and Bummis covers for the beginning. NB's run through SO many diapers that I could never justify spending money on lots of nice diapers. There are a couple of companies that will rent KL0's which I thought was an interesting idea. Get a nice big stash of good diapers that they will outgrow fast, and then get to send them back for a credit for more bigger diapers.

What size was your son when he was born? What weight? And how long? (I'm realizing that length is also a huge factor in the way diapers fit, since my 18lb string bean daughter can wear small fuzzi bunz with plenty of room for continued growing, whereas a short & chunky-thighed 18lb baby probably couldn't.)

When my boys were newborn, I liked using preemie prefolds and proraps nb covers. I had to change them often because they pooped all the time anyway. I kept up with prefolds and proraps for my first son and tried more pockets with my second. I found that the proraps covers held in the nb poo much better than pocket diapers when he was tiny. My first was 7lbs 10oz and my second was 7lb 80z at birth. I forget how many I had, though! A friend of mine gave me ton of nb covers (she tried cding briefly and didn't stick to it), so I know that I have more than enough for this baby. I'd like to try thirsties, but have so many covers already that I feel bad buying more! I definitely liked the trimness of the newborn prefolds and covers and was able to keep using the prefolds for doublers and pocket stuffers. It's good to have infant sized prefolds and small covers, too, since you never know how fast your babe will grow.

-I use homemade fitteds but have also used prefolds with success. Wrap style covers are easier to get on skinny newborn legs then pull on covers.

-It depends on how often you want to wash. I have two in diapers and 2 dozen for each kid is enough since my pail is full every other day anyway.

He was only a 10lber but he was 23" long with a stomach circumference of 14 1/2".

I've used newborn sized prefolds with my newborns; that size lasts until about 5 months, but my babies have been big, between 8.5 and almost 10 pounds, so the prefolds fit from birth without being too bulky. If your baby is around 7 pounds at birth, you may want preemie size prefolds for a little while. I need about 3 dozen prefolds for a newborn, and 6 covers is minimum. I like Bummis pull-up pants as well as wool covers of various types. I also have used fitted diapers that I made myself, and those were really nice. Fwiw, we used cloth from birth with our second two babies and from about three days with our first. Meconium actually comes out better than one might think.
