I am having a heck of a time with photobucket so this is the only pic I can share right now. There are three windows in my dining room, two the size shown, and then the center is about twice as wide. I keep saying the blinds look like they belong in a crack house (they don't go up and down, one is tied in its position), then family asks me how often I've been to crack houses. I haven't, but I've seen them on tv.

Anyway, main objective here is to block light, these are west facing windows. I was thinking roll shades and dressing them up with fabric. I don't want to spend a bunch of money. I can sew very very very basic curtains.

How about roman shades? You can make them yourself, if you can sew a straight line and are willing to spend the time learning. Most fabric stores will even have one of those "How to make" pages already printed up on roman shades, so you don't have to buy a book on window treatments (though, the library would be a good source, too).
