Ladies, join me for a rant about ingredients/derivatives (aka my hopeless vitamin D search)

So we got the results of DD's bloodwork back yesterday- everything looks good, which is SUCH a relief because it means that she's absorbing nutrients correctly. EXCEPT- her vitamin D is low, which I kind of expected. But it's REALLY low- it's 11.

So.... I'm on the quest for a liquid D supp for me to take (otherwise I would have to take like 10 pills a day). I just assumed that Pure Encapsulations would be a good bet, but I emailed them just to be sure... and this is what I got back (paraphrased):
Quote:
The vit D is derived from lanolin, but "may also contain traces of corn starch". The medium-chain triglycerides (only other ingredient) are derived from palm and coconut oils.
: Can someone tell me WTH there may be cornstarch residue in lanolin?!? Not that we could have used it anyway, since DD's allergic to coconut... And why can't they just say palm/coconut oil on the frickin label so that I didn't have to waste my time writing an email to them?

So now I'm waiting for a response from Rx Vitamins about their Liqui-D3... keeping my fingers crossed. The ped's office has one that's in a sesame seed oil base, and Carlson's has one in coconut oil. WHY OH WHY CAN'T I FIND A VITAMIN WITHOUT A BUNCH OF ALLERGENS ADDED TO IT?!?

Rant over. Give me your best vents about stupid places that allergens don't need to be. (and any liquid D reccs if you have them. )

My favorite is when they add rice flour or rice whatever to a supplement - because everyone knows that nobody is sensitive to rice. Oh - wait, I am. Uh oh. Argh.

I know what you mean about looking for a clean vitamin D supplement. I just went looking for one for me. In fact, my supplements and DH's (and sometimes DS's) are all different because our food lists pretty much don't overlap. Double argh.

I feel for you on the corn. I have a long list of offenders, but I don't think I'd trade all those for having just corn as an offender. It's a biggie.

Sucks about PE. Not very "pure," huh?

We use Rx Vitamins. Suposedly, it just has D + olive oil.

Wow- they emailed me back FAST! They say just lanolin-derived D and olive oil... so I guess that's what I'll be trying, even though I'm not positive that DD is ok with olive oil. Guess we'll see! Hopefully a few drops per day won't be enough to set off a reaction, anyway...

Wow- I'm already half way down the second page!

Bumping myself for more D suggestions (or more ranting ).

This page says my Carlson's is lanolin based not fish based. Hmmm. I only started it a few days ago. Rrrr. The Solgar actually says fish derived, and they confirmed on the phone. I just assumed that the Carlson was fish derived since they are known for their fish oil. Okay, I forgot that I should never assume with foods and supplements. I also should have realized that anytime you get a vitamin D alone it's from lanolin not fish.

Well, DD's CST recommended another brand for us- Biotecs. So I just emailed them and am waiting for a response! Keeping fingers crossed that this one doesn't have any allergens.

Oooo, we used the Biotics Vitamin K drops instead of the injection when DS was newborn. I'd be curious to find out what they tell you that the vitamin D has in it. TIA

Well, it seems that at least one manufacturer has a fish-based D3 without vitamin A... Bluebonnet Nutrition. However, it's in a softgel and it has (eeks) soybean oil in it. Oh well. I'll keep looking.

Just read my bottle....has cocnut oil in it so that won't help the OP, sorry.

Just found another brand when I was at the HFS.

http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Suppleme...itamin-D3.html

I just sent off an email asking what the veggie glycerin is derived from, so I will let you know when I find out! But they do have a nice "does not contain..." list, so I'm feeling hopeful.

I will check that out- thanks. I don't know what pectin or sorbic acid are made from... but it's worth a shot.

Isn't pectin usually from apples?

Hey cs,
Do you know about Vitamin Research Products? Our homeopath used to prescribe things from there a lot, and I have found they often have stuff without the common additives that others have. Here is their liquid Vitamin D supp.

For other ingredients it just says Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT oil). You could email them and see. Their customer service is very professional and helpful.
Well, I just googled MCT oil and it looks like it can be derived from either coconut oil or palm oil. Aren't you guys okay with palm oil? That would be great if it was that and you do palm. I'd email them at least, or call.

You don't do potato do you? I can't keep everyone straight...

I was taking TwinLabs allergy D3. They are powdered and free of "most common allergens such as fish, soy, yeast, barley, wheat, lactose and all milk, citrus and egg products. No added flavorings, sugars, salt, artificial sweeteners, colorings, preservatives or salicylates."

I think I read that it was lanolin derived D3 and the other ingredients are potato starch, rice bran defatted extract, gelatin, water, silica, medium chain triglycerides, magnesium stearate

I'd be glad to send them to someone who wants them. I've got most of a bottle, then Casey reacted to rice, so they are out for me.
