? about "hidden" penis...

I hope this is the right place...I am figuring it is....DS seems to have what appears to be a "hidden" or "burried" penis. It appears unusually small but when I press down on the surrounding fat pad it is pretty much a normal size.

Does anyone have any experiance with this and their ds's.....I have done a little research on it and some places say that it will resolve on it's own most of the time. Does it really? I am taking him into the ped. on Friday because he hasn't been since he was 3 weeks old and I just want to get him into the dr. just to say I have taken him for insurance purposes.

She is a very homebirth, AP etc. friendly ped but I am just afraid to even mention it because I am afraid of all the horror stories I have heard about dr's retracting quicker than you can blink!

I am almost 100% sure this is what ds has.....I was concerned about "micro"-penis at first but it is DEFINITELY there you just have to push down on his fat pad. He is 6mos. old and I would say between 21-22lbs. He has been this way since birth but he was a 10lber so I think he just had extra fat there to begin with.

Should this be something I should be concerned with? Should I bring it up to the dr.? I have heard that some need surgery for it!

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.....I am starting to get kind of concerned over it....not that his size matters but I am just worried he won't be able to lead a "normal" life/sex life.

I was so thrilled at first to be having a son, but now I am wishing he would have been a girl.....I didn't realize that there could even be complications or problems in this area. I read that these problems happen because of a hormone problem during pregnancy and I did eat Luna bars (which were mostly soy) for extra protein when I didn't always have time to eat right away...I heard that soy can affect boys! I am just stressed about the whole thing. I want somebody to tell me there is nothing to worry about but complete honesty too.

Sorry to ramble on...

aw hon, it sounds like he's just a big chunky baby! When he starts slimming down from crawling/walking/running and the fat pad diminishes, he will be just fine.

And any "good" doc won't do a thing about a buried or hidden penis until LO is old enough to loose the chub.

It's nothing you did by eating soy! He's just a big baby! (and I bet adorably squishy)

My son had a buried penis and it self corrected about the age of 2.

Yours should be fine. Don't let the docs (a ped or a urologist) talk you into surgery/circumcision, they are usually woefully under-educated when it comes to the intact penis. And before your pediatrician at your upcoming visit even comes near him, before the diaper comes off, make it 100% clear to her that she is not to retract him or pull on the skin of his penis whatsoever. Make sure she hears you.

Do some searches within the MotheringDotCommunity Forums for buried penis & hidden penis, and I'll bet you'll find some more stories from other people that will put your mind at ease as far as the condition self correcting.

Sounds like from your description he dosnt have a problem since it comes out of the pad easily it is not cause for concern. If it where truly a buried penis pushing on the pad wouldnt make much difference.

Be very careful about letting any Dr examine your little guys penis so that no retraction or pushing back of the foreskin is done.

He will grow out of it around 3 years of age. Nothing to worry about.

Circumcising him would just make it smaller, so don't let them try to talk you into that! I'd agree with the others that, if his penis appears normal when the fat pad is pushed out of the way, the issue appears to be with the fat covering things up, not with him having a problem with his penis. Once he gets older and more active, it should resolve as others have said.

sounds like my DS and my nephew too. My nephew is circed and you really have to press to see it, in fact it really looks like a belly button! DS has a longish foreskin so at least you can still see that. DS weighs 22 pounds and is 4 months old, Dnewphew is 9 months old, around 27 pounds. (We have gigantic children, apparently.)

Just some more reassurance Momma. My younger ds had this. The funny thing is he was a skinny little baby but, he had a rather substantial fat pad in his pubic area. His penis looked all sunken in, with just the top 1/4 of the foreskin being visible. I could pop it out by pressing on the fatpad and it would look normal. He is now four and I cannot remember the exact age at which it corrected itself, but, he looks perfectly normal down there now. Relax and enjoy your boy...they are so much fun :

Take care,
Tara

My DS2 had this too. He was 18 pounds at 3 months and a really small looking penis. Noe he is two, a mere 30 pounds ad looks longer that DS1 who is 4. The penis also grows a lot between infanthood and adulthood, so I'd just let it be and not worry.

Thanks so much for all the reassurance! I really does make me feel better about it. I'll quit worrying....for now anyways.
