Middle East History

I'm looking for a readable book that could give me some history of the Middle East, particularly during the Ottoman Empire. Another book (a novel) that I read referred to a period where the Turks ruled over Christians, Jews and Muslims in an inclusive, relatively peaceable environment. I can't find anything to refute or support that.

Anyone? Even a novel would be great--I get really mired down if something is *too* weighty.
