Your Favorite Childrens Book

I am purchasing one book for DS tonight at B&N online. Well maybe two. What is your favorite boo for an almost three year old child, and why?

Given your sig, I'd have to recommend Super Hero ABC

Lots of previews and supporting materials here:

http://www.bobmcleod.com/abc.html

It is an ABC book, deals with superhero themes that little boys (especially) love. My sons love it, pour over it, pick their favorite heroes with friends. It provokes conversations like, does Henry have to like Huge Man best because he starts with H or can he like Water Woman because she swims with whales?

We got "Moose Tracks" by Karma Wilson from my son's Scholastic order. I think I just got it because it was one of the cheaper ones -- but everyone loves it! None of us mind reading it over and over. It is rhyming, it has lots of different animals, fun, very detailed illustrations (my kids notice something new every time we read it I think), and it is funny. I am getting ready to order one she's better known for, apparently, called "Bear Snores On". The reviews for it are really good.

DD's favorite book when she was three was, by far, The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett. It's a new take on the old gingerbread man story (You know- "Can't catch me!"). The illustrations are beautiful. Honestly, DD is still in love with it, more than a year later!

The author has recently written a sequel- Gingerbread Friends. It's just as charming as the first. It has a really neat, fold-out surprise at the end too.

A really cool thing about nearly all of Jan Brett's books is that there is a second story happening along the borders of each page. We're big fans around here.

Anything by Richard Scarry! Cars and Trucks and Things That Go is a big fave. The animal drawings are adorable, the story is cute and engaging and of course you get to look for Goldbug on every page. I also really like his nursery rhyme book, but DS kind of wore out of that one. OTOH, he now knows and awful lot of nursery rhymes!

Thanks to the PP for the Superhero ABC suggestion! We love superheroes and that looks v cute, and waaaay more age appropriate than most of the superhero lit I've found so far.

Great choices!

Love Jan Brett in particular. Her Goldilocks is my favorite of her books, but they are all purely works of art.

I bought a Skippy Jon Jones Book also, I just don't remember which one.

I think that I bought 7 or 8 books total. I can't wait until they arrive.

Oh, and I just wanted to say THANKS for everyone's suggestions, also! I just ordered Bear Snores On, Gingerbread Baby, and Cars and Trucks and Things That Go.

We have soooo many books, but yet, are in need of some really, really good quality "keepers". Many of our books are cheapies that we have ordered from Scholastic. These hardcover ones I will be keeping up on our "special" shelf, and taking good care of them. I look forward to reading these to my children, and hopefully grandchildren someday.

It's funny, I loved The Giving Tree as a kid, but reading it as an adult, I find it annoying. The kid is so aweful! My hands down favorite children's book is Make Way for Ducklings.

Well i guess that is kinda the point isnt it? That that child is so "awful" and selfish, and yet the tree still loves him and wants the best for him no matter what. (mother/child or earth/humans or god/christians)

Meh, maybe that IS the point. But I don't like the message. I think there is a difference between loving someone and wanting the best for them and just giving and giving and giving to someone who never seems to want to learn to stand on their own two feet and is rude and ungrateful to boot. I don't think that kind of giving does anyone any good. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Shel Silverstein fan, but that one is definitely not my fave.
