Meds for bronchiolitis? (6 month old)

DD was diagnosed with bronchiolitis today. The pedi told us to keep her hydrated and watch her breathing. If it gets any worse, go to the ER. That seemed like frustrating advice to me. I HAVE been keeping her as hydrated as I can, and she just gets progressively worse. It feels awful just to sit and watch it progress.

Some older posts here mention medication for bronchiolitis... what are they? What do they do? I'm normally not a med person, but I really am not enjoying this watch over my baby as she struggles to breath. To think it might get worse freaks me out. I haven't slept in DAYS (DD1 has been sick too) but can't sleep because I'm so nervous about the baby's breathing.

What meds are there? I assume they are prescription only? Anyone with experience with bronchiolitis, please answer!! I'll take non-med advice too!

Antibiotics won't be effective

They might give an inhaler like albuterol if it is bad or antivirals (antivirals aren't always effective)

My nephew has bronchiolitis obliterans which is a chronic form.

mom2tig99Nroo03 how is your little one doing? Sorry I didn't see your post until today. Probably you are through it now, but I wanted to respond, just in case...

When DD was sick I just stayed on top of keeping her hydrated.
- I simmered pots of water on the stove during the day to keep the air inside the house moist.
- I steamed her in the bathroom for at least 10 minutes every few hours.
- I nursed her as often as she would nurse to keep her fluid intake up. Also I kept ME hydrated to keep my milk supply strong (I ate oatmeal too, just to give my milk a boost).
- I tried to keep her nasal passages clear - by using Little Noses saline drops and using the nose squeegie when it looked like it might help. It seemed clear most of the time. However, I am sure using the drops helped hydrate deeper inside her sinuses than I could see.
- Every time her the breathing seemed more labored I took her to the bathroom and steamed her for a while.

In the end we never did medicate. She got her first ear infection around the same time so you might just want to be on the lookout for that.

Ditto....

I have used a nebeulizer for DS when he had severe wheezing from this, but since it is viral in nature, there is not much you can do.

I used lots of steam and humidifiers and TONS of SA whoich thins mucus and is anti-inflammatory. I also used Dr. Christophers and Nature's sunshine products which are safe for use in babies

he ended up with pneumonia, according to xray; and is still basically the same. i'm beginning to suspect wc actually. the mucous is just **so** thick that he coughs, and coughs, and coughs, and though he doesn't "whoop" he has major trouble catching his breath for a few seconds. big ds (my asthmatic) is coughing til he pukes several times a day and the dd is starting to cough again. lil ds has already had 2 rounds of abx, way be4 either of my ther kids had them. for the "sinus infection" amd then for pneumonia.

so far we have been:
using sa in his milk (i exclusively pump)
hot steamy bathroom time
a pan of water on the vent (for the heater to keep the air mpoist
nebs w saline
milk in the nose/saline in the nose and bulb syringe
