Suggest a baby carrier for me

My babe is 3.5 months and verging on 15 lbs. He's very interested in looking at the world. I have a birthday coming up and thought I'd recommend the purchase of a baby carrier to my MIL. My thoughts are perhaps a woven wrap (I love the way my Moby distributes the weight on my shoulders) or a SSC such as a Beco or Ergo (I'd love to do back carries since I think it'll satisfy my son's desire to look at the world).

I have a few baby carriers already:
I have a sling which my son seems to like but all his weight on one shoulder gets very heavy after a while.
I have a Moby wrap which is lovely if I can get him in there asleep but when he's awake he likes looking at the world and I won't be able to do a facing out carry with him in it for too much longer as he continues to gain weight. And there's the consideration that stretchy wraps feel less secure as babies get bigger.
I have a mei tai but, he seems to still need to be froggy legged in it which rules out back carry for now. Sometimes the straps end up feeling a bit uncomfortable (perhaps user error on my part or the fact that it's a no-name one from eBay). Also if he's awake, he seems to want to stand in the carrier rather than froggy leg or try straddling.

Thanks for any suggestions. I'd love to increase our babywearing time. :

If you want to try a ssc maybe the pikkolo would be something to consider. You can wear your ds on your front or back. But the feature you might really appreciate is that you can cinch the bottom so he can have his legs out with having to spread them so much. And you can also face him outward if your back can handle it. If you think you might want to check it, I recommend theportablebaby.com. They give you a free waistband support for back carrying when babe gets really heavy. Another feature that I think is cool is that the shoulder straps have memory foam in them! Have fun checking out carriers!

Actually the mei tai was our go-to one at that age.

If you want to try legs out, you can cinch the bottom with a ribbon or scrunchie to make it narrow enough.

Also, you can totally do a back carry with legs in!

Scroll down to "newborn high back carry."
But, sounds like he might prefer legs out if he's standing - it just might be too wide if it's not cinched.

Far be it from me to discourage a new carrier purchase, though, lol. Some Beco is great for back carries if you are nervous about them, because of the internal seat. The other SSC with the seat is Calyx.

You could also consider a woven wrap if you are otherwise liking your moby but finding it unsupportive as he gets heavier.

the first carrier I was able to do a back carry with was a Beco (super easy). I have almost a dozen different carriers & the Beco is the one that I use the most, so my vote is for a beco.
-I also like that it goes up higher on DD's back than the Ergo

woven wrap

i'd suggest a woven wrap as it sounds like you are happy with your moby if it didn't stretch as much. i alternate between an interlock and a woven wrap for my 20lb little one. the interlock only stretches horizontally on the fabric not vertically-so he can stretch and move around without us losing support. this is his favorite one right now.
My woven is very solid and wraps the same as the intelock(over both shoulders). Both are about 5 yards long and ample enough for the basic front and back carries.
Our wraps are from a montana company There is also a german company that carry wovens. the montana company is organic and has 3 wovens and the german company is colorgrown with several colors.
Since you've got the wrap technique down i'd go with a woven wrap

I'd try a MT, like Kozy. www.kozycarrier.com

Def try cinching the base of your MT - my LO hated being froggy legged, he was legs out in a babyhwak MT from 3 mos. Also, if he likes having his arms out, you can try rolling the bottom over to shorten the body of the MT so it`s easier for him to see out.

If you want back carries so he can see out, stay away from the Ergo. My LO hates being on my back in it cause it sits low and all he can see is my back. He wants to see over my shoulder. I usually carry him on my back in what`s called a Rucksack carry with a woven wrap. I can get him up high so he can see over my shoulder.

I`d rec a woven wrap- brands like Didymos, Storchenwiege, Girasol, Hoppediz are all great (the Germans make awesome woven wraps!) There are some great deals on the `For Sale or Trade` Forums at thebabywearer.com

Sounds like you are loving all the great things about your Moby, except that it's stretchy and the baby is getting heavier. So, I'd suggest going to a good quality woven wrap. There are some more affordable than others and all can also be bought used too. Neobulle, Hoppediz, Girasol, BBslen, Vatani are all very good quality affordable woven wraps. Then there's also Storch and Didymos. Really though, you can't go wrong with any of those brands, so look around and pick a color you like most from these.

I absolutely love my ellaroo wrap! MIL bought it for me when DS was born...it was $75

It is wonderful for front, back, I can tie it into a sling for side, for easy on/off back carries by myself, great for exercise...I don't know what I'd do without it!

It's been almost 9 months since I first got it, and it's been washed maybe 10 times...and still as wonderful as ever, even since it's been peed on, pooed on, spit up on, used as a burp cloth, etc.

I recently decided to give putting him in our Mei Tai straddled and it's been working out. I did try getting him onto my back without the MT just to see if I could get him back there so next I need to try to get him up there with the carrier.

I'm intrigued by the prospect of a woven wrap but I mainly use my Moby when he's asleep. Once he wakes up, he gets bored being wrapped onto my front. But perhaps if I figured out a back carry that might work....

Oh, and he's now getting closer to 16 lbs than 15. I've got a chunker on my hands.

My son was a chunker too. I loved it! He was 12lbs at 1 month and then added on 4lbs more at 2 months and a couple more at 3 months...slowed down after 6 months though.

I would not recommend a back carry with a Moby, personally. It's just not enough support (or even width) for a good back carry. If the mei tai is working for you, then that could be your answer.

Back carries are great for babies that like to look out and about. You can do a high back carry with both the mei tai and a woven wrap by tying the straps (for mei tai) or the rails (for woven wrap) right below your breasts. There are awesome wrap carries in this link.

Mt's offer versatility. If you're not into buckles, the Catbird Baby Mei Tai's already have the cinching mechanism on the bottom of the seat. I think it's a great option for mt's since you don't have to tinker with a scrunchie or the like to cinch the bottom when you want to forward face out.

I feel okay tucking him into the Moby in the hug hold but ff seems less secure. Back carries in general make me a tad nervous but I'm going to try it with my MT real soon....

Try a woven wrap!

My DS is about the same age and weight as yours and we've loved his Moby, but it was starting to get uncomfortable and kind of saggy.

I purchased two used wraps from TBW's FSOT boards...a Didymos and a Girasol. The woven wraps are AMAZING (chem-free, and BEAUTIFUL)....worth every penny and my ds and I are both much more comfortable now. They are also more grippy than the Moby, so they are actually easier to use once you've already got the hang of wrapping.
