Has anyone gotten the kids magazine called Your Big Backyard? DD would LOVE to get mail and she loves learning about animals so I thought this might work for her. Has anyone gotten this for their 4-5 year old?

DS is animal-crazy and I have the subscription card is on my desk. I would like to hear options too.

No but we just signed up for "baby animals" which is the step before "your big backyard." I ordered it because I saw "your big backyard" at the library and LOVED it! I would highly recommend it just from the little bit that I saw.

dd got a gift subscription to Big Backyard when she was about that age, and enjoyed it, although I think some of it was more advanced than she needed.
All my kids have loved Chirp at that age (and younger). They ask to read them every night for bedtime stories, love trying the crafts and puzzles, and find the jokes silly!

Yes, we get Your Big Back Yard and love it! I got it for my then 4 year old who's not 5. He and my 3 year old both enjoy it very much.

We get Ranger Rick, the next step up from the same magazine group. DS really enjoys it, and I find it to be a very well made, informative magazine. This month's issue included advice on how to be more eco-friendly, as well as at least one photo of a baby animal nursing.

thanks for the responses - I am so glad I didn't just toss it in the recycling. I think DD will be getting a subscription for her 5th bday.

My kids have all done Big Backyard and Ranger Rick. I *just* got the invite for the new Baby Animals, and we've sent in the card already for bbDD! The money goes to a good organization (wildlife folk) and the magazines can't be beat for info, photograph (ummm I love looking at them too!) and pro-environment. Also they've done some issues that talk about mamas nursing their babies...:

So, I'd wholeheartedly recommend them!

I loved it when I was little. I didn't even know it was still being published. I would think most kids would like it if it's anything like it was back then.

We get Big Back Yard and my daughter loves it -- she's gotten it since she outgrew Baby Animals, which we also enjoyed.

Yes, we get this magazine for DD (4ys), and she loves it. Crafts, stories, activities. Good stuff. Her little bro likes to look through it too.

We love Big Backyard -- we also loved Wild animal Baby (it's still coming, actually, my parents each bought one and WAB doesn't run out for a while longer!). We'll be sticking with NWF through Ranger Rick.

Not such a fan of the National Geographic mags -- the baby one is okay (if flimsy) but the regular one does have ads. Of course, this does make them much cheaper! but we won't be getting it.

Another fan of YBBY here. Great photography, age appropriate, and NO ADS.

Wow, I didn't know they still published this, I totally loved it when I was a kid. I'm glad the OP brought this up, now I know to look for it again when LO is a bit older!

I see you've already gotten plenty of opinions, but I feel compelled to weigh in too. Your Big Backyard is a wonderful, wonderful magazine. My daughter (almost four) loves the stories, pictorials, and crafts. I really enjoy reading it myself - we both look forward to each issue.

My kids received this magazine as a gift from our babysitter...and they loved it. I really like it too. Lots of really neat colorful pictures, some activities and picture stories, I think it's pretty good. I don't know how much it costs though.
