I know people seem to love blogs to increase their sales, but how are they any better than articles right on the store's website? Is there a difference in how the search engine will see them?

As far as I know, there is no difference between how a search engine sees a blog versus articles on a website.
If you are writing to increase traffic, then well written key word rich articles would likely do the trick.
If you are writing to increase sales, then a blog that has at least one post per week would be more likely to be the better choice.

I tried to figure out how to explain myself without being more confusing, and I think the best way is for me to start over.
I prefer blog over articles....here is why:
Blogs help win customers over by personalizing your store and helping customers to connect with and "know" who they are shopping with. Blogs also drive traffic to your site because your posts are likely to be more frequent, loaded with keywords, and contain links to your store info and products.
Articles tend to be less personable and less frequent which makes them less likely to help you connect with your customer, but may still help with driving search engine traffic to your store, if they are keyword rich and contain links to products and/or information within your store/site.
Technically you could have both a blog and articles - that would be ideal. The more content you have, the better!
