Finding similarly minded parents in NoVA - Fairfax area

We moved to NoVA about 18 mo ago from MD, I have a 4 yo girl and 18 mo boy, we are very relaxed about our unschooling (with a touch of Waldorf) and so far, I haven't been able to connect with any parents with kids around the same age. I did join several groups, but for whatever reason the playgroups /get togethers did not turn into anything permanent and my kids didn't enjoy meeting new kids every week.

To some extent I am the "weirdo" in my neighbourhood, because I don't take my kids to school, I don't stress out that my dd can't read or write, we have very few toys, so when the kids we know come over, they are bored, because there is not much to play that doesn't require some effort/imagination. We play outside at least for an hour even when it is super cold/rainy and I can't leave my kids with my hubby to go to a dinner, because my kids are super attached. I don't take my kids to the zoo or the circus or do a pony rides b-days, because to me that is cruelty to animals. I am also a foreigner (coming from Eastern Europe) and I am not shy or introverted, just somehow moving to VA, I haven't been able to find anyone close by with similar mind-set. I recently realized how much effort it took on my part to go to all these playgroups every week and not connecting to any of the moms, so I slowly stopped going.

But with the New Year, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and reach out in hopes to find someone interested in getting together for playgroups/get togethers once in a while. I am sure there are other people like me out there in the Fairfax/Vienna/Reston area, I am just all out of ideas how to find them.

Hi lonely momma! I know how you feel. My babe would definitely be boring for your two (he is only 8 months old) but we are trying to get out and about at play groups, too. I stick out - lots of tattoos, rediculously outspoken about birth and attachment parenting (and also an animal rights activist). We have a television set but no tv. We're those neighbors people are confused about. When my son is old enough he will also be unschooled until he demands otherwise. We are in Falls Church, Va. Maybe we could hang out outside sometime?
