moms of ebf babies w/GERD - do you avoid problem foods? Also, poo issues..

My ebf 3mo ds is on prilosec for his GERD. He had esophageal surgery on his 2nd day of life. It is because of this, his esophagus does not function normally & will need to be on meds for at least the 1st year of his life. Anyway...couple questions for moms of babies w/GERD or other GI issues. Do you alter your diet in hopes it will help your babies reflux..even if he/she doesn't show symptoms of irritation? I worry soo much about his comfort & would like to do anything I can to help him. He is overall a very happy lil boy

My other question is about green poo. I did give up all dairy about a month ago, but we still have green mucousy poo. Should I try eliminating soy & others as well? He doesn't have any other symptoms like rash or discomfort...oh..and no food allergies in our family. Could his meds be causing the the poo probs?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I don't know much about GERD and the meds, but the green poop can totally be a sign of food intolerance. To anything, unfortunately. I would add soy and gluten to the dairy avoidance (do it 100%!) and see what happens. Trial and error is a PITA, but the only way to really know what (if any) foods are causing the problem.

My 2mo old has GERD and I've learned with her big sis who also had it real bad that diet changes don't matter much. So I don't bother. I also have green poo here, but it doesn't seem to bother her, so I'm not worried. She's not on any meds though. I guess I'm no help

Green, mucousy poo can also be unrelated to your diet, it can mean the baby is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. This link explains the difference:

Block feeding can help reduce this so that the baby gets a better balance of milk: http://www.mother-2-mother.com/blockfeeding.htm

I completely believe in altering diet to help with GI issues. Come on over to the allergy forum for lots of supports and ideas. We allergies, intolerances and reflux-y issues in LOs all day every day.

If it weren't for the other issues you're having, I probably would not alter my diet knowing your son has a problem that will cause reflux. Some kids are going to have reflux, nothing will change that. My kids still needed meds after changing my diet, but my diet helped them w/ other issues and helped their meds work better. About 50% of kids who have dairy issues have soy issues as well so it would be best to eliminate them both for a while. My first was just milk, soy, and egg, the last 2 added wheat to that and w/ Evan I did the total elimination diet b/c he was so bad.

My son had GERD from the time he was about 3 - 5 months old. He was throwing up so many times a day...and doing the arching thing, seemed to have a lot of pain, refused to nurse esp at night (I had to find tricks like getting him almost to sleep first, doing it in the bath, leaning over him while he was laying in the changing table, putting a paci in for a minute then replacing it with my nipple, you name it) - we chose not to medicate, and he outgrew it by 6 months. I eliminated dairy and didn't notice any improvement and didn't stick with it for more than 3 weeks because of that. I did notice some improvement when I stopped having any kind of caffeine. Just wanted to give you my experience...we had a rough 2 months then, never supplemented once though and he was growing fine and having enough diapers (thats' why Dr said we didn't have to medicate) and now he's still nursing many times per day at 14 months. I hope you find some answers and things improve for you soon!
